Choma is a rural town with 46,000 inhabitants in the Southern Province in Zambia 300 km southwest of the capital Lusaka . It is 1424 meters above sea level and is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 204,898 inhabitants (2000 census).

economy

Choma was a refuge for 25 agricultural economists displaced from Zimbabwe who leased land in the surrounding area on a long-term basis. They operate a highly mechanized cultivation of tobacco and maize and employ an average of 120 people per farm. The region developed within three years. Finance Minister Ng'andu Magande said in 2005: “Money has broken out in Choma.” Nevertheless, poverty is still so widespread in the rest of the district that forests are being cleared to produce charcoal, which is why ever larger areas of this arid area are being eroded.

tourism

In Choma there is the Choma Hotel, the Kozo Lodge and the Mambushi Chalets for tourists. The area towards Lake Kariba is used for hunting safaris. There is a museum and handicraft center with handicrafts and a gallery with exhibitions and a small library. Basketry is common.

Infrastructure

The trunk road T1 between Lusaka and Livingstone is different, asphalted than the other streets around Choma. Choma is on the Zambia Railways Livingstone – Lusaka line, which makes the place a regional market. There is a rarely used airfield, schools and the small Choma General Hospital .
