Kalomo is a place and a district in the southern province of Zambia . The place Kalomo has 12,485 inhabitants (2006 estimate), is 1200 meters above sea level, 400 kilometers southwest of Lusaka and 150 kilometers northwest of Livingstone on the railway line and highway T1 between these two cities; the Kalomo district is 15,000 km² and has 194,000 inhabitants (2006 estimate).

The origins of Kalomo go back to 1900. It was the capital of Northern Rhodesia from 1902 to 1907 . The “Administrator's House” from that time is still standing. However, from 1950 onwards the development largely ceased and migration began. Many people moved to the nearby Kafue meadows. Then the city council drew the conclusions and decided on a development plan 2000-2004, which was supported by various German development organizations, including the GTZ and the Protestant Church with schools and an agricultural research and teaching institute. Political attention was directed towards drinking water supply and sewage disposal, road construction and social infrastructure such as schools and hospitals. Kalomo got two new clinics next to the nearby Namwianga Mission, which is financed as the Zambia Medical Mission from Abilene, Texas, USA and operated with 200 US-Americans, renovated roads and new schools. The George Benson Christian College was founded in Namwianga for teacher training . The population grew again. The crop yields increased.

economy

Agriculture is the dominant sector. The soils in the district are sandy but fertile. Rainfall is low, but on average sufficient if seeds suitable for dry soils are planted, such as chickpeas, millet, beans and peanuts. Livestock farming is common.

There is a 1000 meter unpaved runway.

Three kilometers from Kalomo, in Kalundu Mound, there are remains of a settlement of the “Dambwa Group” from the 9th – 12th centuries. Century, the first arable farmers in this region, who assimilated the hunters and gatherers of the "Kalundu group". Some consider a settlement to be possible as early as the 4th century, which must be viewed critically without a scientific dating of the artifacts. Zambian archaeologists also speak of the Kalomo tradition . The excavations took place in the late 1950s, early 1960s when the road was being built.
