Geographical location of Mazabuka

Mazabuka is an agricultural town in the Southern Province of Zambia with 130,000 inhabitants, at an altitude of about 1200 meters above sea level. It is located 150 kilometers west of the capital Lusaka on the T1 highway and Lusaka- Livingstone railway , south of the Kafue- Auen. It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 203,219 inhabitants (2000 census).

economy

Mazabuka is surrounded by sugar cane plantations . On the outskirts is the sugar factory that produces most of Zambia's sugar. Otherwise, his commercial life is geared towards agriculture and its machine and tool needs.

It is a city with high levels of immigration, as the sugar farms in the fertile Kafueauen region are among the most important employers in Zambia alongside the mines. In addition to the sugar cane fields, small farmers have settled here who grow maize and operate dairy farming in the floodplains, including meat production. In the meantime, agriculture has been expanded to include cotton, peanuts and soy.

These branches of production have seen a remarkable increase in recent years. The FAO notes a shortage of labor in almost all branches (2005). This agricultural orientation of the city makes it difficult to collect exact population figures. It is an agricultural agglomeration (with Bascom: rus in urbe ), the center of which is the city, whose economic, social, political and technical infrastructure is used by everyone. 70 percent of the agricultural land around Mazabuka is artificially irrigated.

Infrastructure

Mazabuka has elementary and secondary schools and several hospitals. It has two main streets, each with some banks, shops, and restaurants. Tourists rarely visit it.
