Geographical location of Monze

Monze is a small town on the important connecting axis Walvis Bay - Livingstone - Lusaka in Zambia and the gateway to the Lochinvar National Park south of the Kafueauen . The closest city is Mazabuka . The population is around 60,000 ( GTZ study from 2004). The district of the same name has 163,578 inhabitants (2000 census).

Infrastructure

traffic

Monze can be easily reached via the well-developed, paved road from Lusaka to the south in the direction of Livingstone and is thus connected to the transport network to the Namibian deep-sea port in Walvis Bay.

The railway line, which has determined the settlement structure in the Zambian southern province since 1908, also runs through Monze. From the station, which was once very important in colonial times, several passenger trains run weekly to Livingstone and Lusaka.

Monze also has a flight runway.

Services

In the city you will find all important facilities, such as a hospital ( Monze Mission Hospital ), a petrol station, post office and banks.

education

The site has elementary and secondary schools, including a well-known private school, the Lwengu School , which is attended as a boarding school in the secondary level by students from all over the region including neighboring countries, and the Zambia College of Agriculture .

economy

Monze is rural. The residents of the Monze district - mostly Tonga - live mainly from subsistence farming with corn cultivation and cattle breeding.

Nevertheless, Monze achieved a certain fame as a battleground for gene food . A famine relief was rejected because anti-GM food activists the delivery as unhealthy , as poisoned denounced and people so prevented them to accept the help.

A considerable number of national and international non-governmental organizations operate in Monze, including the human rights organization Law and Development Association (LADA) and the national network Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR). Above all, LADA has a prominent position for Monze, because the organization, which was originally founded in the villages around Monze, has developed from a small grassroots movement in the fight for the rights of children and women into an effective organization with national significance . Her main goal is to use legal advice to strengthen the rights of girls and women in traditionally male-dominated rural Zambia.

In the area of urban water supply, Monze and the neighboring villages are included in the water supply and wastewater disposal project of the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau , which includes all cities on the so-called Line of Rail .

At the north entrance of the city there is a lodge, which with its snack also serves as a stop for the intercity buses from Botswana, Namibia and South Africa. In Lochinvar National Park, which was only converted from a farm into a national park in the 1970s, there is only one lodge , which, however, with its tended camp is located directly on the lagoon (flood plain of the Kafue River). Few of the villagers can find work in the national park, as the park is not part of the traditional visiting program on a Sambi trip and neither elephants nor big cats can be found.

There are considerable deposits of gypsum and clay 38 kilometers from Monze. Gypsum is needed in cement production.

Importance of the Church

The Catholic diocese of Monze, whose main seat is Monze and which extends over almost all eleven districts of the province, is of great importance for the southern province. In addition to a mission hospital in Monze, she maintains other hospitals, but also teacher training centers and schools. The diocese also plays an important role in the care of HIV- infected and AIDS- sick people by having a network of well-organized care services throughout its parishes .

Others

The 9-hole golf course of the Monze Golf Club is a marginal phenomenon. Due to a lack of water, the course laid out by the British does not have greens, but so-called browns. Their surfaces do not consist of fine turf as usual, but are covered by fine sand mixed with waste oil. This sand is then rolled smooth with a rake before putting.
