Zambia College of Agriculture

Zambia College of Agriculture (ZCA) is a Zambian state college for agricultural management and economics with two locations, in Monze and in Mpika .

The ZCA was founded on April 1, 1938 in Monze ( Southern Province ). At that time, 112 Europeans, 850 Africans with work and 105 Asians lived on 200 hectares in 90 houses, half of which were used for business purposes. There was its own power generation. There were 300 houses in the African township.

Today, like the Natural Resources Development College , the ZCA works closely with the University of Zambia , whose degrees require diplomas and certificates from the ZCA. The ZCA is subordinate to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. It maintains, directly or indirectly, the National Irrigation Research Station in Mufulira , Misamfu and Mongu .

The site in Mpika ( Muchinga Province ) was opened in 1976. The training is based on sustainable agricultural models in order to secure a long-term livelihood for regional farmers. This shall be achieved through knowledge exchange through intercropping and observance of crop rotation , reclamation of crop residues, general soil conservation measures mulch, compost technology to avoid artificial fertilizers, the benefits of nitrogen-fixing legumes and the use of cover crops to improve soil quality. Office and teaching buildings, training rooms, a specialist library, student and teacher accommodation, a dining room and recreational facilities are available here. The water is supplied by a treatment plant that pumps water from the Mwateshi. In addition, two drilled wells provide additional water for the college.

Agriculture in a broader sense is taught and researched, including soil analysis, seed development, tree nurseries and animal husbandry. The ZCA is a training center for agricultural managers to ensure food security in Zambia.

In Zambia, farmers can be distinguished as follows:

  • Subsistence farmer, up to one hectare of cultivated land, only a few varieties in cultivation, hoe
  • Small farmers, up to 20 hectares of cultivated land, different varieties in cultivation, limited use of artificial fertilizers, plow
  • Large-scale farmers, 21 to 50 hectares of cultivated land, different types of cultivation, use of seeds and artificial fertilizers, plow
  • Estate, over 50 hectares of cultivated land, use of machines, seeds, artificial fertilizers, cultivation of land
