In agriculture, a cover crop is a fruit in which another fruit is sown so that two harvests are possible in one year . Furthermore, undersown crops can also be an agricultural crop with slow development, which is not harvested until the following year. The culture that grows under the cover crop is called undersowing . In principle, all types of grain and maize, as well as legumes such as z. B .: Field bean possible. Grasses and clover are possible as undersown crops. Examples are winter rye as a cover crop and clover as an undersown or barley as a cover crop and alfalfa as an undersown.

The advantages of undersowing are nitrogen fixation , erosion protection and weed suppression . However, these are opposed by the competition for water and nutrients. Furthermore, the use of herbicides for the main crop is only possible to a limited extent or not at all.
