Theodor Gassmann

Theodor Gassmann (born April 23, 1828 in Braunschweig ; † December 2 or 3, 1871 in Hamburg ) was a German playwright.

Life

Theodor Gassmann, whose parents were engaged at the court theater in Braunschweig , held a position in the bookshop of his brother Karl Gassmann in Hamburg from 1847 after high school and business school. In 1852 he became director and dramaturge at the Altona Theater ; In 1853 he took over the direction of the Kroll'schen Theater in Berlin. In 1854 he returned to Hamburg and became a freelancer at Der Freischütz and, in 1858, at the periodical Die Reform

On May 16, 1862, Gassmann married Etty Thate, who later fell ill with tuberculosis and cared for him until the end of his life.

The magic play Die Blumengeister (1856), the folk drama Die Juden von Worms (1859), the comedies The Loud Secret (1869) and Swabian Pranks (1869; 1871 award-winning by the Association for Art and Science , Hamburg) were among his formal and stage-oriented pieces. as well as the Christmas play Der Märchenkönig and several antics general applause.

Gassmann also edited several novels by the writer Fritz Reuter (1810–1874) and brought them to the stage in a dramatic arrangement. He had collected cheerful stage plays .

Theodor Gassmann was an uncle of the Austrian actress and theater director Marie Geistinger (1836-1903). The award -winning play Schwabenstreich , which was in demand at Wiener Bühnen in 1871 , was initially awarded to the Theater an der Wien , where Geistinger was both performing and leading at the time. Geistinger's co-director Maximilian Steiner (1830–1880) left the performance of the play to the Imperial and Royal Hofburgtheater in November 1871, despite the purchase of the work . The Theater an der Wien had decided on Kneisel's The Daughter of Belials , which it performed with Geistinger in the leading role on January 19, 1872 and which was repeated 26 times. The kk Hofburgtheater first performed Gassmann's Swabian pranks on February 12, 1872, when it received little recognition from the public and the press and gave rise to critical comparisons with the successful competition at the Theater an der Wien.
