From 1869 to 1875 Steiner ran the Theater an der Wien together with the actress Marie Geistinger . In this role he was able to win the composer Johann Strauss Sohn for the theater and with him initiated the classical phase of the Viennese operetta . The debut Indigo and the 40 Robbers (1871) was followed by the great success Die Fledermaus (1874). When Geistinger accepted a longer engagement at the theater in Leipzig in 1875 , he continued to manage the theater until 1880. After his death he was followed in this role by his son Franz Steiner (born November 20, 1855 in Temesvár ; † February 1920 in Berlin as the owner of a theater agency).

The actor and theater director Gabor Steiner was also a son of Maximilian Steiner. The composer Max Steiner was a son of Gabor Steiner.
