Mongu

Mongu is the capital of the Western Province (formerly Barotseland ) in Zambia , is 1050 meters above sea level and has 25,000 inhabitants (1980). It is located a few kilometers east of the Zambezi , with which it is connected by a canal. It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 162,002 inhabitants (2000 census).
Mongu lies in a semi-arid, sandy area (annual precipitation: 910 mm), the Barotse Plain, which is flooded from the Zambezi to the outskirts during the rainy season. The surrounding area is dominated by Kalahari -Vegetation and miombo (6.3 million hectares in the district). The city is dominated by a cathedral and the water tower. The dry and rainy season pastures of the Litunga , as the Lozi king is called, lie in front of the town in Lealui and Limulunga . The rainy season palace is now a museum. The Kuomboka ceremony, which is still carried out today, refers to the former move from one palace to the other. Mongu is still inhabited by the Lozi people today.
economy
Mongu has a business district, a large weekly market and an airport, which is mainly used by the Zambian Air Force and which the United Nations used as a base for the repatriation of Angolan refugees after the civil war in Angola . There is a power station on the outskirts. Mongu is known for its baskets and carpets. Fish is sold here, for example the tiger fish from the Zambezi. An important product is grass for roofing and fence construction. Mongu offers tourists the Mongu Lodge. Mongu is the main rice-growing area in Zambia. After Lusaka is 620 kilometers.
Infrastructure
Attempts are being made to build a road from Mongu to Angola. It would be the shortest and fastest connection to a seaport for Zambia. There is a hospital, several schools and a 1,500 meter long runway.
