Location of Barotseland in Africa |
Barotseland is located in the Western Province of Zambia . It largely coincides with this province, under which the closer geographical descriptions can be found. Barotseland is the former territory of the Lozi Kingdom . It existed from around 1835 to 1890 and then as a British protectorate until 1964. Even today, the area enjoys considerable autonomy in Zambia. But the aspirations for complete independence continue to this day, although a treaty of 1964 stipulates that Zambia will gain independence together with Barotseland as an integral part. The traditions of the kingdom shape the life and customs of this province to this day.
The people of Barotseland declared themselves independent on March 26, 2012 because the new government of Zambia had not complied with the 1964 Autonomy Agreement.
