Geographical location of Kalabo

Kalabo is a place and a district in the northwest of the Western Province of Zambia on the Luanginga River . It is the seat of the administration of the district of the same name with 114,806 inhabitants (2000 census).

If the water level is sufficient, Kalabo can only be reached by river, and by land only with four-wheel drive. The paths from Sesheke there are deep sand. The ferries across the Zambezi are not reliable. It is from the SADC a road from Mongu to Angola planned. The entire area is sparsely populated and remote as far as Angola.

Kalabo is the seat of the district and national park administration of the Liuwa Plain National Park . There is a 1,000 meter long airstrip, a river port, a regional market, a health center and schools. Since Kalabo is so difficult to get to, tourism in the Liuwa floodplains with their large herds of wild animals cannot develop.
