The Farman MF7 Longhorn was a successful French military aircraft made by Farman from before the First World War .
history
With his biplane designed in 1911, Maurice Farman created the first commercially successful model. The MF7, also known as Type 1913, was created on this basis. The MF7 was also manufactured under license in the UK. In total over 350 MF7s were built; the type was further developed to the MF11 in 1914 .
construction
The MF7 was a biplane with wings of unequal span, which were braced with struts and wires to a central fuselage nacelle with two open seats. Directly behind the seats was the engine with a pusher propeller that turned between the two fuselage struts. The landing gear consisted of double pairs of wheels on a skid frame, at the same time the horizontal stabilizer lying far in front of the fuselage nacelle was attached. This boom earned the machine the unofficial nickname Longhorn . Initially a 70 hp Renault engine was used, later more powerful models were used.
use
At the beginning of the First World War , the French Air Force and the Royal Flying Corps used the MF7 as a reconnaissance aircraft . After that, it was used as a training aircraft.
Museum plane
An MF7 is on display at the Norsk Teknisk Museum in Oslo , Norway.
