Totum pro parte
Totum pro parte ( Latin ) meanstranslatedinto German : 'The whole (stands) for a part'.
This is both a special form of metonymy and synecdoche . Therefore the totum pro parte is a rhetorical figure from the group of the tropics .
The counterpart of this figure is the case of the pars pro toto (one part describes the whole).

- The police arrested the perpetrator. → One or more police officers arrested him, not the entire police.
- If you talk about the Internet , although you mean a certain website on the World Wide Web .
- We are Pope! → Not all Germans, as the headline of the Bild newspaper announced in April 2005, but only Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger as Benedict XVI.
