Kapiri Mposhi is a city with 40,000 inhabitants (2006 estimate) in Zambia north of the capital Lusaka . It is located in the Central Province on the Great North Road ( Tanzam Highway ). Kapiri Mposhi is 1250 meters above sea level and is the capital of the district of the same name with 194,752 inhabitants (2000 census).

In 1931 the first copper mine of the later Copperbelt was excavated here.

Transport and economy

Kapiri Mposhi is on the T2 trunk road . It is primarily a transit point, a railway junction from which Dar es Salaam , Lubumbashi in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Cape Town can be reached. It is the railway line of the Zambia Railways Ndola -Lusaka- Livingstone . Two kilometers from the small town, the TAZARA route to Tanzania branches off at New Kapiri Mposhi . Zambian imports and exports from and to the port of Dar es Salaam take place on this rail route .

Furthermore, Zambia's most frequented road route, the T3 trunk road, begins here . It leads to the Zambian part of the Copperbelt region and further to Lubumbashi in the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo .

In Kapiri Mposhi there are a few shops, a gas station, a weekly market and a motel. Kapiri Mposhi offers some jobs in glass ( Glass Products Ltd ) and ceramic production.
