Mkushi , including Old Mkushi , is a town with 12,308 inhabitants in the Central Province in Zambia . Mkushi is 1,100 meters high on the Tanzam Highway and on the TAZARA 110 kilometers east of Kapiri Mposhi and 280 kilometers south of Mpika . Geologically, Mkushi is at the southeast end of the Copperbelt . It is the capital of the district of the same name with 107,438 inhabitants (2000 census).

The place lives from agriculture. The soils around Mkushi are acidic. But dolomite is mined for lime extraction in order to improve the acidic soils for agriculture and to increase yields. The Solwezi deposits are the only ones in Zambia that are being exploited. There are copper deposits , but it is not worth mining. In August 2006 it was reported that in Chiwefwe near Mkushi 2.36 million tons of manganese ore with a grade of 46%, a metal essential in the iron and aluminum industry, were found.

Infrastructure

Mkushi has several hotels a little further along the river, in Mkushi River. From Mkushi, the Kasanka National Park and the Kundalila Falls of the Mkushi River can be reached. The place has an unpaved, 1000 meter long runway, elementary and secondary schools and a hospital.
