The Elbląg – Braniewo (Haffuferbahn) railway is a disused railway line in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in Poland .

Haffuferbahn-Actien-Gesellschaft

Haffuferbahn-AG common share dated April 1, 1899
Haffschlösschen train station

The Haffuferbahn-Actien-Gesellschaft , or HUB for short , was founded on August 12, 1896 in Elbing by the Province of East Prussia , the Bahnbau-Gesellschaft Lenz & Co GmbH and other interested parties. At the end of the Second World War , the AG for Transportation with 41% and its subsidiary, the Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , with 34.5%, were the main shareholders of the capital.

The purpose of the company was to build and operate a small railway from Elbing (Elbląg) to Braunsberg (Braniewo). In contrast to the Prussian Eastern Railway , which had connected the two cities since 1852, this should not run inland, but along the coast of the Frischer Haff .

Haffschlösschen platform

The train began in Elbing at the east station of the HUB, which only served the transitional goods traffic to the state railway, and then led to the city station, where the passenger trains began. In a northerly direction, the line reached the Haff, touched cadinene (Kadyny) Tolkemit (Tolkmicko) and the Warmia Bishop city Frauenburg (Frombork). After 48 km, the standard-gauge railway ended in the district town of Braunsberg at the Ostbahnhof next to the state train station. A siding led from Cadinen to the Hohenzollern dominion of Cadinen with a famous stud.

Haffschlösschen train station towards Elbing

The Elbing City Railway Station was 2.5 km from the State Railway Station, so those transferring had to use the city tram .

The operation was opened on May 20, 1899 to Frauenburg and continued to the end on September 7, 1899. The East German Railway Company took over the management. From May 15, 1934, the railway's own bus connection Elbing - Tolkemit was set up.

Trains stopped running at Frauenburg station in 2008, but the station toilets were still open

In 1939 the vehicle fleet comprised nine steam locomotives, 26 passenger cars, three pack wagons and 111 freight cars.

After the Second World War

After the Second World War , the railway was put back into operation, although the section between Braniewo (Braunsberg) and Braniewo Brama (Braunsberg Obertor) could not be operated because of the destroyed bridge over the Pasłęka ( German  Passarge ).

Old route of the Haffuferbahn in Elbing

On May 22, 1982, the line was connected by the newly built section from the Tropy junction (on the main Malbork –Elbląg line) to Elbląg Zdrój directly to the Elbląg station. The freight route through the city was shut down after passenger traffic was no longer led to the city station (Elbląg Miasto) in 1958.

business

On December 11, 2005, the scheduled passenger traffic on the entire route was set. It was reopened on January 15, 2006, but only lasted until April 1, 2006.

In 2010, the state government committed itself to getting trains running again together with the neighboring communities. With the help of the Arriva RP railway company , the Pomorskie Towarzystwo Miłośników Kolei Żelaznych ( Pomeranian Railway Friends ), under the direction of the Marshal's Office in Olsztyn, made special trips on the route after the route was reopened on July 4, 2010 for seasonal special trains on the entire route. This was followed on July 1, 2012 by the discontinuation of the Tolkmicko – Braniewo section and on August 10, 2013, the Frombork – Braniewo section was reopened for seasonal special train traffic. There have been no trains running since 2015. In 2017, the tracks began to be covered with bushes.

In 2018, discussions took place about the restoration of the route by sharing the costs of the local residents. The use of around 100,000 zlotys by the municipalities and subsidies from the voivodeship would enable four pairs of trains per day that SKPL Cargo could drive. However, the city of Elbląg and the Powiat Elbląg refused to give their consent.
