The East German railway GmbH (ODEG) is a company founded in June 2002 joint venture to 50% of the Prignitz Railroad (part of Netinera group) and the BeNEX . It operates passenger traffic on thirteen railway lines in Berlin / Brandenburg , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Saxony , including four regional express lines.

The ODEG is a member of the tariff association of federal and non-federal railways in Germany (TBNE).

The enterprise

ODEG employs 475 people and operates more than 13 million train kilometers per year. Some of the employees have been working in the newly built depot in Eberswalde since 2005 , where repairs and cleaning work on the railcars are carried out.

Regional traffic

ODEG network plan

The first lines operated by the ODEG were two lines in southern Mecklenburg, from Hagenow via Ludwigslust , Parchim , Waren (Müritz) to Neustrelitz, and from Neustrelitz to Mirow . In 2004, ODEG took part in a tender for RE services in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , which, however, was won by competitor DB Regio . In the same year the ODEG took over some lines in the east of Brandenburg.

In 2006/07 the ODEG provided 4.85% of the transport services in the state of Brandenburg.

The ODEG emerged from a joint award procedure of the Verkehrsverbund Oberlausitz-Niederschlesien and the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg as the winner for transport services from December 2008 in the Spree-Neisse network.

In 2009, ODEG emerged as the winner of lots 2 and 4 from the VBB's 2008 tender for “Netz Stadtbahn” . These include the RE 2 Cottbus - Berlin - Wittenberge / Wismar, and the RE 4 Rathenow - Berlin - Ludwigsfelde / Jüterbog, two main lines that were previously operated by DB Regio. The network also includes the RB 33, RB 35 and RB 51, where the ODEG started operations at the end of 2011. On December 9, 2012, traffic on the R 6 route from Neustrelitz to Mirow was canceled by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The Hanseatische Eisenbahn GmbH now runs on this route on behalf of the district.

Since December 15, 2013, ODEG has been operating on the Rehna - Schwerin - Parchim route previously operated by its competitor Ostseeland Verkehr GmbH. The previously known vehicles of the Regioshuttle type as well as some Talent railcars not previously in the ODEG pool are used here.

With the timetable change in December 2014, the RB 25, RB 36, RB 60, RB 63 from the former East Brandenburg network and the RB 35 and RB 63V were taken over by the Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn . The previously existing line RB 60 from Berlin-Lichtenberg to Frankfurt (Oder) is operated between Berlin and Eberswalde as the newly established RB 24 by DB Regio , and between Eberswalde and Frankfurt (Oder) as the RB 60.

In July 2014 it was announced that ODEG would take over operations on the RB 34 line from Rathenow to Stendal for three years from December 2015. Were used Stadler GTW and the Regio-Shuttle , the hitherto driving on the way to Bad Saarow (650,739).

On November 19, 2015, the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg announced that the ODEG would be awarded the contract for the new tender for the “Spree-Neisse” network. It will thus operate the RB 46 and OE 65 lines in Lusatia beyond 2018 until December 2030. The services on the OE 64 and OE 60V were not awarded in the new contract. A future of the OE 64 is thus open, the OE 60V is to be integrated into the network "East Saxony". On March 31, 2017, ZVON announced that it would continue to order the services of OE 64. The services are optional in the Spree-Neisse network, so that ODEG will take over these services from then on.

The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania transport company awarded the Ostseeküste-Ost sub-network to the ODEG for a period of two years from December 2019 as part of an emergency measure. This includes RE lines 9 and 10 from Rostock via Stralsund to Sassnitz, Binz and Züssow. The previous operator, DB Regio, submitted a review request to the responsible procurement chamber against the award, but the Rostock Higher Regional Court judged the award to be lawful.

Current vehicles

The ODEG has been using Regio-Shuttle (RS1) vehicles since it was founded . There are currently seven railcars (VT 650.86 to VT 650.92) on the Mecklenburg routes. A further 25 vehicles (VT 650.58 to VT 650.82) were ordered for the expansion of the company in Brandenburg. All vehicles were built by Stadler in Berlin-Wilhelmsruh and are made available by the parent companies Netinera and Hamburger Hochbahn AG . The Brandenburg vehicles are stationed in Berlin-Lichtenberg, Beeskow and Eberswalde.

Two vehicles (VT 650.71 and VT 650.72) were transferred to Lichtenfels (Bay) after the cancellation of routes by the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg in December 2006, where they performed some services for the (half) sister Vogtlandbahn . In the meantime, one vehicle has been returned because it is needed for the traffic between Fürstenwalde / Spree and Bad Saarow-Pieskow that began at the end of 2007.

In 2007, ODEG ordered three new Regio-Shuttle vehicles (VT 650.83 to VT 650.85) from Stadler to operate the Lausitz network. The delivery took place at the beginning of May 2009. The parent company BeNEX has ordered six new Desiro vehicles from Siemens Transportation Systems for 16 million euros . In addition, two Brandenburger RS1s were relocated to Görlitz.

For the route network in Berlin-Brandenburg to be operated from the end of 2011 or 2012, ODEG placed a major order at Stadler Pankow for the delivery of 16 four-part double-decker railcars of the Stadler KISS type , a regional shuttle and six two-part articulated railcars at the end of December 2009 . However, there were approval problems with the delivery of the Stadler KISS trains, so that they could not be used on the Regional Express lines as planned at the end of 2012. However, the first four KISS multiple units were not used on the RE 4 line until January 2013, and in May 2013 the ODEG was able to handle the traffic with its own vehicles. DB AG double-decker coaches initially operated on RE 2, while City-Shuttle and Bm coaches from EuroExpress were used on RE 4 in the first few weeks after the takeover of operations. In order to keep the travel times, the traffic stops at the RE 2 stations Breddin (every two hours) and Brand (morning and evening hours) were restricted for several months. The 16th and last KISS (0445 115) was delivered on July 16th and named Eberswalde on August 17th on the “Open Day”.

The currently used FLIRT vehicle was still in use on the NordWestBahn

A Stadler Flirt type vehicle borrowed from Transdev is currently in use on the RE2 amplifier train pairs Cottbus-Berlin . The vehicle was previously on the road for the NordWestBahn in the Bremen / Oldenburg area. Before that, a Lint 81 from vlexx was used there.

In 2020, ODEG will receive seven class 4746 multiple units (type Desiro ML ) from Siemens Mobility . These come from a joint procurement with the Austrian Federal Railways . In order to be able to operate RE lines 9 and 10 east of Rostock as early as December 2019, ODEG rented six ÖBB 4746 multiple units until the end of March 2020.

Future vehicles

For operation from 2022 on lots 1 and 4 of the Elbe-Spree network, a total of 31 new vehicles will be ordered from the manufacturers Siemens and Alstom .

These vehicles will be 21 six-car and two four-car Siemens Desiro HC . Eight new Alstom Coradia Lint 54s will be used on the non-electrified routes . At the request of the states of Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt, the six-part Desiro HC can be expanded to two four-part Desiro HC.

Furthermore, the 16 four-part existing vehicles of the Stadler KISS type are to be modernized.

East German maintenance company

The Ostdeutsche maintenance company (ODIG), founded in 2005, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ostdeutsche Eisenbahn GmbH. It has operating locations in Eberswalde (since 2005), Parchim (since 2002) and Görlitz (since 2008 in the former depot). In these the vehicles of the ODEG are cleaned, refueled and serviced. In 2011 the maintenance hangar in Eberswalde was extended from 42 to 151 meters in order to be able to service the four-part KISS double-decker multiple units. The Trilex vehicles are also serviced in Görlitz .
