The Cottbusverkehr GmbH (CV) is a transport company that the public transport (public transport) in the city of Cottbus and in the western part of the surrounding district Spree-Neisse provides (line bundles West). Cottbusverkehr is a municipal company and is part of the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB).
history
The first attempt at local public transport was established by Josew Klopzynsky in 1893. It was the first horse-drawn bus line that ran between Sandow and Cottbus train station. The fare at that time was 30 pfennigs. On June 14, 1898, the city of Cottbus announced the construction of an electric power station. However, since the output would have been too low for a tram operation planned in the meantime, the construction of an electrical works was put out to tender again in 1899. On March 2, 1900, it was unanimously decided that the power station should be built by Siemens & Halske . It was also decided that the company Dresdner Elektra AG would be awarded the contract to build and operate the tram. When the contract was about to be signed, the Elektra company withdrew and since no other company could be found, Siemens & Halske should now submit a cost estimate for the construction and operation of the tram. The price for the power station was around 1 million marks and for the tram, including the tracks, depot and land purchase, around 800,000 marks. On June 22, 1903, the first tram line was opened.
In 1913 2.5 million passengers were already carried, the income amounted to 250,000 marks, but these did not cover costs. In 1918 there were 4.65 million passengers.
In 1927 the city bought the first bus, a bus made by the VOMAG company from Plauen. It had 35 seats and had 60 hp. On January 1, 1939, the Stadtwerke assigned their vehicles to the tram.
The number of passengers rose in 1942 to 6.8 million, in 1944 it was 13.3 million. After the end of the war, everything was gradually repaired and rebuilt. After 1945, numerous companies in the Soviet occupation zone (SBZ) were expropriated, placed under municipal administration or assigned to the municipal utilities. On April 1, 1949, the "KWU Cottbuser Stadtwerke" was formed, including the electrical works including tram, the gas and water works. The KWU consisted of 16 companies in total. On October 22, 1951, the GDR , which had now been founded, issued the "Ordinance on the Organization of Nationally Owned Local Enterprises". As a result, the KWU was abolished and converted into state- owned companies (VEB). The tram belonged to "VEB Örtliche Industrie - Stadtwerke Cottbus" from July 1, 1951, but this was changed again in September to "VEB (G) Stadtwerke Cottbus - Verkehrsbetriebe", the (G) stands for municipal property. On December 20, 1951, bus traffic was reorganized and expanded. On February 18, 1952, the route of the tram changed and the line numbers were finally introduced. The network remained in this form until 1960.
The assignment of the company branches to different ministries brought the end of the municipal utilities. From January 1, 1953, the tram was thus independent - as "VEB (K) Verkehrsbetriebe der Stadt Cottbus", which (K) stands for municipal operation. The public utility bus had to be stopped on October 7, 1953 due to defective and no longer operational vehicles. The "VEB Kraftverkehr Cottbus" continued to operate the lines if possible. It was only when three IKARUS 601 buses arrived from Hungary on October 11, 1954 that regular scheduled services, consisting of three bus routes, began again on October 17. On October 6, 1968 the company was given a new name: "VEB Cottbusverkehr". Between 1953 and 1972 all tram terminus, except at the train station, were equipped with reversing loops. This made it possible to use one-way vehicles on almost all lines. For this purpose, a dispatcher center was set up and there was a new logo. Cottbus was the first tram company in the GDR to have only two-axle standard cars (GOTHA). Bus traffic has meanwhile gained supra-local importance, so that there were 7 bus routes in May 1960, and three more in November. Up to 1968 practically all places in the Cottbus district had a bus connection. On March 12, 1976, the payment boxes were replaced by punching machines, as the number of fare dodgers increased more and more.
In the years that followed, the tram network was greatly expanded, from 13 km in 1949 to 21 km in 1983.
On the occasion of the "centralization of the economy" and due to the resolution of December 17, 1980 by the Presidium of the Council of Ministers regarding the district-managed motor transport combines, the Council of the Cottbus District Council issued a resolution on July 22, 1981 to integrate the "VEB Cottbusverkehr" into the "Verkehrskombinat Cottbus" ". Since it was always problematic to inform passengers in the event of traffic disruptions, 15 radio-controlled stop information systems were put into operation on April 1, 1986. Bus traffic also developed very well; there were now 11 city bus routes and 26 regional bus routes.
When the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989 sealed the end of the GDR , Cottbusverkehr was facing one of the greatest upheavals in its history. Suddenly there were cheap used cars "Made in Germany", the number of passengers decreased rapidly. The tariffs were never revised due to the "policy of stable prices" in GDR times, so that they have not allowed cost-covering operation for over 20 years. 1991 income covered only 41% of expenditure. A considerable price increase was essential, this amounted to 300%, from 15 pfennigs to 50 pfennigs. On July 11, 1990 the "VEB Cottbusverkehr" became today's "Cottbusverkehr GmbH". Initially, only the city of Cottbus was a partner, from 1992 also the district, from 1997 to 2007 Cottbusverkehr was a subsidiary of the "Stadtwerke Cottbus GmbH". For regional bus transport, the new bus station with 11 bus platforms was inaugurated on Marienstraße in December 1990.
In 1990 Cottbusverkehr had to accept the trams and buses contractually bound by the GDR, 15 KT4D and 7 IKARUS buses. At the beginning of 1991 7 KT4D were taken over from Erfurt. In the bus sector, the switch to low-floor vehicles was completed in 1992. Since April 1, 2004 Cottbusverkehr has only been using trams with a low-floor center section in regular service. This makes Cottbus the first city in Germany to offer passengers a low-floor section on all journeys.
Ulrich Thomsch was replaced as Managing Director of Cottbusverkehr GmbH on June 30, 2010, he is now Head of the Transport Division. The new managing director was Jörg Reincke from July 1, 2010 to August 31, 2014. He previously worked for Rostocker Straßenbahn AG and Mecklenburgische Bäderbahn . Jörg Reincke left his job at Cottbusverkehr on August 31, 2014 and moved to Braunschweiger Verkehrs-AG , which he has now converted into a GmbH. Cindy Janke was the acting managing director from September 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015; she was previously and is now again working as an authorized signatory / commercial division manager. By means of a public tender to search for a managing director, the Cottbusverkehr GmbH supervisory board carried out an extensive application process on its own. Ralf Thalmann, who was previously managing director of Geraer Verkehrsbetriebe and previously worked for Deutsche Bahn, was able to prevail. On April 1, 2015, Ralf Thalmann began his work as managing director of Cottbusverkehr GmbH.
Cottbusverkehr has been the operator of the Cottbus Park Railway since April 1, 2011 . On September 26, 2012, the city council updated the local transport plan and decided on new concepts with it. After that, originally only buses and no trams should run on the Schmellwitz-Anger - Jessener Straße section from autumn 2015. However, Line 1 continues to run with three trams from Monday to Friday every 20 minutes. In addition, the station forecourt is being redesigned into a traffic junction for trams, city buses and regional buses. The once difficult funding situation (State of Brandenburg) has eased and the station forecourt has been under construction since March. In 2017 the "climate-friendly mobility traffic center" is to be completed. Other projects include the design of the transfer facility in Madlow (bus and tram) and the redesign of the Ottilienstraße stop in connection with the construction of the new street in Straße der Jugend. A plan approval procedure is still in progress for the Madlow interchange, which is not yet expected to be completed. The Stadthalle Post stop was rebuilt in autumn 2014. It is now longer, more handicapped accessible, there are more seats available, a new ticket machine has been installed, rails and switches have been replaced, and the bus lane has also been renewed. In the course of this conversion, the pre-sorting switch in the direction of Ströbitz / Bahnhofstraße was replaced by a normal switch in the street position. Thanks to the deep grooves in the tram tracks, tram traffic in this area is much less noisy and less subject to wear. In 2014 Cottbusverkehr exchanged all old ticket machines for new, modern devices. In recent years, however, many ticket machines have been blown up. So far, however, the perpetrators have not been able to steal any cash or ticket paper during their attacks.
