The Züssow station is a separation station for the municipality of the same name in the Mecklenburg- Western Pomerania district of Western Pomerania-Greifswald . It is located at line kilometer 191.9 of the Angermünde-Stralsund Railway and is the starting point of a branch line to Wolgast .

Location and structure

Platform and UBB train at night

The station is located southeast of the Züssow village center at the intersection of the Angermünde-Stralsund railway with the federal road 111 . The branch line to Wolgast goes south with an arc to the east out of the line.

The system originally had three platform tracks. Track 1 was for the branch line to Wolgast, track 2 was on the house platform and track 3 was an intermediate platform on the main tracks. There were also various freight and loading tracks.

history

The station was opened on November 1, 1863 together with the Anklam – Stralsund section and the Züssow – Wolgast branch. At the same time, the railway line to Wolgast went into operation. The operation was carried out by the Berlin-Stettiner Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft until 1879 . The station building was designed larger for the transfer traffic than for the normal through stations. The company also built a horse stable for the local landed gentry. A larger train station restaurant and a waiting room have been set up in the reception building for travelers and residents alike. A toilet facility was built next to the building.

At the junction to Wolgast there is still a signal tower that was built back then. To the left and right of the station forecourt there are two residential buildings each for the railway employees, which were gradually pulled free and are now empty.

Opposite the main building on the forecourt is a relatively large post office, which was set up when the station was being built because the post was transported by rail in the direction of Wolgast and Usedom. With the advent of post-motor vehicle traffic, the building was converted into a residential building. All of the station's buildings were built using clinker brick, according to the typical station and post office architecture of the time. The goods sheds were also built in clinker construction, but combined with half-timbering.

When the Greifswald-Jarmener Kleinbahn opened in 1897, there was another rail link. The GJK had its own train station opposite the main building. There was an access ramp with which the vehicles of the small railway could be loaded onto platform wagons of the state railway. The narrow - gauge railway , which is primarily used for freight traffic , was operated until 1945. All vehicles and the tracks were then dismantled and transported away for reparation purposes for the USSR. In some parts of the facilities of the Kleinbahn there is a track that is used as a bike and hiking trail.

After the war, Züssow station became an important loading station for VEB Landmaschinenbau Gützkow as well as for the shipyard and other companies in Wolgast. At the end of the 1970s, thousands of military vehicles (URAL, GAZ, KRAS etc.) were unloaded here as imports from the USSR for the East German NVA. They were converted for the local road traffic regulations in the Gützkower company, which has since been incorporated into the VEB repair shop in Neubrandenburg .

In the 1960s, the old signal tower was shut down and a new signal box was built at the intersection of the tracks with the B 111.

In the years 2002/03 the main platform and the connecting platform were closed and the central platform opened, which can be reached via a technically secured passenger crossing . This platform is 320 meters long and more than ten meters wide. After the station was connected to the electronic interlocking in December 2006 , there are only two continuous main tracks and a platform-free overtaking track. To the north-west of this, a sweeping system was built for trains on the RB 23 line that ended here . This is located north of the platform. There is also a pull-out and a siding. The total length of all tracks is almost 4,300 meters today, about two thirds of the length before 2006.

At this time, the ticket office and service rooms of the railway were closed and replaced by fully technical systems. The restaurant survived for some time and was closed a little later. The signal box on the B 111 did not survive, it was demolished after 2008. At the same time, the ailing platform roof on the station building was torn down.

After 2010, the station forecourt including the parking lots was redesigned and the access routes reorganized.

Platforms and tracks

Before the station was equipped with electronic signal box technology, there were four main tracks with a total length of 2215 meters. There were also eight side tracks, which were a total of 2145 meters long. Three main tracks had a platform. Their useful length was between 270 and 325 meters. The total length of all tracks running in the station was 6700 meters. The rural trading cooperative and a state-owned grain trade had a siding to the station. The 310 meter long track was at the northern end of the station.

Reception building

The times of the Berlin-Stettin Railway Company resulting reception building was home to a thriving station buffet and service rooms for the supervisory staff and the ticket sales. It once included baggage and express goods handling, as well as bike and luggage storage. At times, passengers had the opportunity to purchase food, drinks and newspapers at the station restaurant via a kiosk during the breaks on some trains. Almost all long-distance trains on the way to Stralsund stopped in Züssow, which is still the case today.

Freight transport facilities

A loading lane runs on the western side of the station, leading to the goods handling area, general cargo hall and loading ramp. Züssow had full clearance rights for passenger, express and freight traffic. The weighbridge had a load capacity of 35 tons.

Other plants

A railway telegraph was available to the public.

Transport links

The station is served every two hours by the regional express line RE 3 of the DB Regio Nordost . In addition, there is a two-hour connection of the RE 10 line of the ODEG to Stralsund Hbf , so that there is hourly service in the direction of Stralsund. In addition, the RB 23 line of the DB Regio Nordost, until 2017 the Usedomer Bäderbahn , runs every hour from Wolgast . This is extended every two hours to Stralsund . Züssow is also a stop for IC and ICE trains. The first ICE train stopped in Züssow on March 27, 2011; it is the smallest place in Germany with an ICE connection.
