The Usedomer Bäderbahn GmbH (UBB), based in the seaside resort of Heringsdorf, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn AG (DB) , owner of the railway facilities on the island of Usedom and on the Züssow - Wolgast and Velgast - Barth routes . Until December 2017 it also operated train services between Velgast, Stralsund, Greifswald, Züssow, Wolgast, Zinnowitz, Heringsdorf and Swinemünde as well as between Zinnowitz and Peenemünde and until December 2019 between Velgast and Barth.

The UBB is a member of the tariff association of the federal and non-federal railways in Germany (TBNE), but without voting rights, as it belongs to the Deutsche Bahn group.

The Usedomer Bäderbahn was founded in 1994 as a wholly owned subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn and has its administrative headquarters in the Seebad Heringsdorf station in the Heringsdorf municipality. On June 1, 1995, the UBB took over the two routes Peenemünde-Zinnowitz and Wolgaster Fähre-Seebad Ahlbeck completely from Deutsche Bahn. With the completion of the combined road and rail bridge in Wolgast in 2000, the former branch line from Züssow to Wolgast Hafen was also completely taken over, whereby the Züssow station was not part of the UBB, but remained with Deutsche Bahn.

The routes have been and will be fundamentally renewed and equipped with new safety technology. When the timetable changed in December 2002, regional trains were operated on the Barth - Stralsund and Züssow - Stralsund lines, with the infrastructure of the Velgast - Barth (so-called Darßbahn ) section being bought by DB Netz .

Right at the beginning of the operation by the UBB the clock traffic was introduced. The main line Wolgaster Fähre – Ahlbeck and the branch line Peenemünde – Zinnowitz were operated every hour. Soon afterwards, a 30-minute cycle in the season was set up for the main line.

With the takeover of the mainland route to Züssow, the half-hourly service to Wolgast Hauptbahnhof was extended and from there it was run every hour to Züssow. After the expansion of the UBB traffic, the trains to Seebad Ahlbeck began (every two hours) in Stralsund (there was a connection in Züssow to and from Stralsund) and served all stops en route. On the route from Velgast to Barth, the UBB took over sole operation.

Following a tender by Verkehrsgesellschaft Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (VMV), the transport services on the island of Usedom have been provided by DB Regio Nordost for 13 years since December 2017 . The previously known Stadler GTW railcars are used . The connection between Züssow and Stralsund will remain part of the award for two years. From December 2019, these traffic will flow into the "Baltic Sea Coast Network". The maintenance of the network remains in the hands of the Usedomer Bäderbahn, which means that the separation of network and operation, which is now required by law, has been completed. The drivers at UBB have been provided by DB Regio since 2013.

Operation and lines

(Stralsund–) Velgast – Barth

The line from Barth to Stralsund was served by the UBB at approximately hourly intervals until December 2019 .

From Barth via Kenz and Saatel to Velgast, regional trains of the UBB , known as the Vorpommernbahn , ran on a single-track, formerly electrified line. Since the UBB only uses diesel multiple units, the single catenary installed here became superfluous and was therefore dismantled in 2005. The trains ran from Velgast to Stralsund Hbf until 2017 on the electrified main line Stralsund – Rostock operated by DB Netz. After initially threatening to stop traffic on December 10, 2017, the line was shortened to the Velgast – Barth section, but now it runs at an approximate hourly rate instead of every two hours.

The line was served from Stralsund to Züssow every two hours, from there to Świnoujście Centrum ( Swinoujscie ) every hour. In the summer timetable, there is a half-hourly service between Wolgast and Świnoujście Centrum, and a shifted hourly service between Stralsund and Wolgast, as every second train serves all stops on the way. From Stralsund up to and including Züssow , trains run on the electrified main line Berlin – Pasewalk – Stralsund operated by DB Netz. The bathing railway's own infrastructure begins in Züssow.

On the Züssow – Wolgast Hafen railway, which has been electrified since 1989, the catenary was also dismantled when the UBB started operating. Due to the takeover of the route by the UBB, the overhead contact line was dismantled over a total of 39 kilometers. The construction work for the extension across the Polish border to Swinoujscie ( pl. Świnoujście) officially began with a ceremony at the border on October 5, 2007. The route was completed at the end of March 2008, but then had to go through various approval and acceptance procedures in both States so that the start of operations was delayed. Almost exactly eleven years after the reconstruction of the first section, the Seebad Ahlbeck – Ahlbeck border (2.5 km), the Usedomer Bäderbahn has been running since September 20, 2008 to the provisional end point Świnoujście Centrum, where a new residential area is already being built.

On June 2, 2011, the new New Pudagla stop was opened as part of the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the railway line .

DB Regio Nordost has been serving the route since December 10, 2017.

Zinnowitz – Peenemünde

The Zinnowitz – Peenemünde railway begins at Zinnowitz station and leads via the Trassenmoor stop and via Karlshagen to Peenemünde station .

A UBB railcar shuttled here every hour with a connection to the rest of the island railway traffic in Zinnowitz. DB Regio Nordost has been serving the route since December 10, 2017.

The bascule bridge in Wolgast over the Peenestrom is a combined road and rail bridge.

There were some peculiarities with the tariffs: The UBB section was calculated for tickets from outside the sole UBB service area according to the NE kick-off tariff, i.e. H. the section was added to the DB maximum price if necessary. The UBB did not allow free family children up to 14 years of age at the normal price, which is customary with Deutsche Bahn.

The UBB did not have a first class . The BahnCard was only recognized for journeys over 50 kilometers, although the UBB is a 100 percent company of the DB Group. The UBB did not sell exchange tickets with Deutsche Bahn. UBB is the owner and operator of the infrastructure on Polish territory for the one-and-a-half kilometer extension from the Ahlbeck border to Świnoujście. The construction costs of around 2.4 million euros are financed 90 percent by the European Union and the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and ten percent by Deutsche Bahn.

The UBB used combustion engine vehicles of the 646 series . Of the class 771 multiple units previously used , only four are left and not dedicated to general operation. Before the UBB opened, the Velgast – Barth and Züssow – Wolgast Hafen routes were served by electric push-pull trains from Deutsche Bahn. In addition to the rail vehicles, the fleet also includes six coaches.

Bus transport

Regular bus service

On January 1, 2016, the UBB took over bus routes 271 to 274, 281 to 287, as well as 290 and 291. These lines were previously operated by Ostseebus GmbH, Ahlbeck. UBB has received the concession for the next 10 years.

Long-distance bus transport

Since February 2014, the UBB has also been operating long-distance bus services to connect Western Pomerania. Currently (2018) long-distance buses run daily from Usedom to Hamburg and Berlin.

Awards

  • In October 2008 the managing director Jörgen Boße received the golden environmental track for his services to UBB , which is awarded annually by the Federal Association of German Railways Managers.
  • In September 2009 the UBB was recognized for its “overall picture” by the Allianz pro Schiene association .
