precursor

Junior Pass, 1991

As the predecessor of the Bahncard, pocket money, junior, family and senior passes guaranteed a discount of 50% on the normal price. At the Deutsche Reichsbahn, the age limit for children was originally set at 10 years; from 1985 to October 1990, children, young people, high school students, apprentices and students within the GDR received a 50 percent discount. Apprentices, schoolchildren and students even received a 75% discount on journeys between their home and their training location. This also applied to workers between home and work.

In 1955, the Federal Minister for Family Affairs Franz-Josef Wuermeling introduced cheaper train tickets for large families. The authorization card, with which discounted tickets for children could be purchased until April 1999, became known as Der Wuermeling . The Wuermeling was also popularly known as the rabbit pass .

In 1976, a senior citizen's pass was introduced, which gave men over 65 and women over 60 as well as early retirees a 50 percent discount on long-distance fares. Later also the pocket money, junior and family pass. This enabled tickets for the federal railway tariff to be bought at half price, first from 31 km, then from 51 km, and later - with an additional token purchased - without any restrictions. As a rule, there were no discounts on tickets from regional transport associations and special S-Bahn tariffs. Also have priority tickets available, which granted 20 percent discount.

At the beginning of the 1990s, a pocket money passport was offered to young people aged 12 to 17 for 40 DM , with which one could travel for half the fare for a year. (With the Deutsche Bundesbahn, young people aged 12 and over had to pay the full fare, with the Deutsche Reichsbahn from 15 years). For 18 to 22 year olds, schoolchildren and students up to the age of 26, a junior pass was offered for 110 DM, with which the regular fare could be halved for one year. In addition, the Hitchhikers Monthly Ticket was offered for this group, which entitles them to any number of trips in 2nd class (without ICE) within a month. It cost 290 DM (for West Germany) or 320 DM (throughout Germany).

At the beginning of the 1990s, the board of directors of the Deutsche Bundesbahn pursued the goal of simplifying the price system in passenger transport. A project led by the economist Georg Tacke, who did his doctorate on non-linear pricing, led a team to completely reorganize the DB pricing system.

Bahncard 50 from 1996

The Bahncard was introduced on October 1, 1992. First the 2nd class card was offered, followed by the Bahncard First for the first class. By the end of the year it had been sold 650,000 times. One reason for the introduction of the Bahncard was customer loyalty, after long-distance passenger transport had gained greater acceptance with the introduction of the ICE last year. The card was marketed under the motto One year at half price . The TV advertising campaign has received several awards. Another reason was the discount on long-distance travel. According to Deutsche Bahn, the introduction of the Bahncard, in addition to the introduction of the ICE, marked the most significant boost to the attractiveness of the means of transport since the Second World War.

The price for the introduction of the card in October 1992 was 220 DM, for seniors and juniors 110 DM. The purchase reduced the price of normal 2nd class tickets by 50%. In the case of tickets for the first carriage class, the reduction was 50% of the price of the 2nd class plus the full difference, so that there was a reduction of 33% for the 1st carriage class. The Bahncard was valid for one year. It was personal and non-transferable.

The 50 percent discount and the price of 220 DM are based on a survey of around 10,000 passengers.

The sale of the Bahncard First , initially for DM 440, began on November 16, 1992; the first day of validity was December 1, 1992. With it, there was also a 50% reduction in 1st class.

The Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund was the first transport association to recognize the Bahncard in 1995. Bahncard holders were able to buy a network ticket at the RMV tariff for young people, with a discount of 40 percent. In return, RMV customers were able to use the Interregio free of charge, commuter and season tickets from RMV were accepted in IC, EC and ICE for a surcharge.

On April 1, 1999, the subscription period for the Bahncard was increased from 12 to 13 months - including four free seat reservations. These offers were later terminated.

In mid-2002 the number of Bahncard customers was given as three million, although this number had been stable for several years before 2002.

Price system changes (2002)

With the new price system planned for the end of 2002 , the Bahncard discount was reduced from 50 to 25 percent. The plan was to keep the "old" Bahncard in the range for a one-year transition phase. According to Deutsche Bahn, the proportion of Bahncard customers who only used their card in local transport and who did not use the new discount system was two percent.

The newly designed Bahncard halved the discount to 25%, but granted the discount on all ticket offers . Parents could purchase their own Bahncard for their own children aged 6 and over for five euros. The abolition of the 50 percent Bahncard met with various criticisms. Federal Transport Minister Manfred Stolpe handed over 10,000 signatures for each railroad in order to receive the previous Bahncard. In the first half of 2003 the number of Bahncard holders fell from around 3 to around 2.5 million. Deutsche Bahn tried to counter this development with an advertising campaign in which 150,000 two-month 1st class Bahncards were given away to former Bahncard holders. In addition, Deutsche Bahn and the Federal Environment Ministry tried to extend the 25 percent discount to transport associations. Passenger associations and transport politicians called for the reintroduction of the 50 percent Bahncard. When the annual balance sheet for 2002 was presented on May 21, 2003, the railway board rejected this.

The subscription to Bahncard sales, which was common from 2002 onwards , was also the subject of criticism and court decisions.

Price system reform (2003)

Therefore, at the beginning of July 2003, Deutsche Bahn reintroduced the 50 percent Bahncard on August 1, 2003. The Bahncard 50 could not be combined with early bird discounts, but up to four passengers on the ticket of a Bahncard 50 holder received a 50% passenger discount . Its price rose from 140 to 200 euros (2nd class) or from 280 to 400 euros (1st class) compared to the Bahncard marketed until December 2002 . At the same time, the price of the Bahncard 25 fell from 60 to 50 euros (2nd class). Bahncard 25 holders could purchase Bahncard 50 after paying the difference. In addition, the Bahncard 100 was introduced as the successor to the network card. The possibility of combining the Bahncard 25 with early bird discounts was initially limited to September 30, 2004, but was extended in 2004 without limit.

On the first three days of sale, 50,000 Bahncard 50 were sold (some as an exchange for Bahncard 25) and 400 copies of Bahncard 100 . In the first ten days 150,000 Bahncards were sold, around 80 percent of them Bahncard 50 2nd class. In the first month, 270,000 Bahncard 50 were sold. In the same period, 86,000 Bahncard 25 were sold.

Further development

After the Bahncard business and customer service had been handled by the Bertelsmann subsidiary arvato in Schortens , Lower Saxony for twelve years (from 1995 initially for Citibank and since 1999 directly for Deutsche Bahn), DB Dialog took over the railroad's own service company on March 1, 2007 this shop. This insourcing was carried out on the basis of corporate policy considerations within the railways in order to counteract excess personnel capacities at DB Dialog . For the first time since the introduction of the Bahncard product in 1992, Deutsche Bahn took over the entire Bahncard business and looking after Bahncard customers.

At the end of 2003, the Association of German Transport Companies turned against a request by DB boss Hartmut Mehdorn to also recognize the Bahncard in local urban transport.

In 2004, over four weekends in April, the 14.9 million ADAC membership cards were recognized as Bahncard 25 in both classes.

The Bahncard system was organized in April 2006 by a consortium led by Loyalty Partners . Up to 22,000 cards a day are produced by GHP . The changeover resulted in considerable problems and waiting times when creating the cards.

In May 2007, Deutsche Bahn put parts of the Bahncard business out to tender again. For an expected order value of 2.8 to 4.0 million euros, the contractor is to take over the pre-filtering of correspondence with Bahncard customers for 30 months from December 1, 2007. Around 900,000 letters, 650,000 e-mails and 10,000 faxes per year were expected. At the end of 2007 it became known that the Bahncard service would be relocated back to the Bahn. At the beginning of 2011, Loyalty Partner announced that it would operate the Bahncard business for a further six years.

From 2004 to the end of 2007, the number of Bahncard customers grew by one million to 4.01 million. In 2003 there were 2.7 million Bahncards in circulation, in the following year 2.9 million. In 2005 it was 3.2 million, in 2006 3.5 million. In 2007 around 4 million Bahncards were counted. According to the company, at the beginning of 2008 more people owned a Bahncard than ever before.

A study from 2004 showed that Bahncard customers use the train far more often and consider alternative travel options far less often than customers without a Bahncard. While respondents without a Bahncard took an average of 5.0 train journeys per year, those with Bahncard 25 made 11.8 journeys per year, with Bahncard 50 17.7 journeys and with Bahncard 100 34.0 journeys. According to a press report, an investigation in 2011 showed that two out of three Bahncard holders use so little rail that the card does not pay off for them.

In September 2012, 4.8 million people had a Bahncard. 83,000 Bahncard holders live in 149 countries abroad. In September 2014 people from 157 countries had a Bahncard. In Frankfurt am Main, Hanover and Freiburg around 20 percent of the residents each have a Bahncard; the largest share of almost 27 percent is in Göttingen (as of September 2014). Between 2011 and the end of 2014, the number of new Bahncard customers decreased by 30 percent.

According to Deutsche Bahn, Bahncard holders have been traveling CO 2 -free in ICE and IC traffic since April 1, 2013 . Bahncards have since been issued in a new design with a green stripe.

At the end of 2014, 5.1 million people had a BahnCard. At the beginning of 2018 there were 5.4 million.

In March 2015, Deutsche Bahn announced that it would offer BahnCards with a three-month term - in addition to BahnCards 25, 50 and 100.

Following an agreement between the federal and state governments to lower the value added tax for BahnCards 25 and 50 from 19 to 7 percent, their prices were reduced by around ten percent on February 1, 2020.

Credit card function

Bahncards with credit card functions were available from July 1, 1995 to March 30, 1999 and again since August 3, 2009.

In cooperation with Citibank , three variants were offered from 1995 to 1999:

  1. a Bahncard with VISA payment and credit card functions
  2. a Bahncard with Electron payment function (credit account)
  3. Bahncard without payment function

The validity of the cards with payment function was two years, that of the regular Bahncard without payment function was still one year. This changed from a daily to a monthly validity - the cards were valid until the end of the same month in the following year. From the cut-off date, all Bahncards were printed with a photo of the owner. With this change, the fee for replacement cards (lost) of 50 DM was abolished, a dining car voucher for five DM (which was sent with new cards) was supposed to compensate for the cost of the photos. The customer data and photos were processed in the USA, which called data protectionists on the plan.

The introduction of the Bahncard with a payment function was marked by breakdowns: The application form initially used did not provide for ordering a Bahncard without a payment function. There were also delays in the delivery of the card of several months and misdirected cards. Consumer advocates criticized premiums of DM 1 per Bahncard that railway employees received for each Bahncard sold. The card advertised as the “new Bahncard” sold sluggishly. Instead of the hoped-for 1.5 million Bahncards with payment function, only 390,000 copies had been sold by the end of May 1996. The Bahncard with payment function was discontinued on April 1, 1999 due to low demand.

On August 3, 2009, Deutsche Bahn and Commerzbank introduced the “Bahncard credit card”, a Bahncard with a credit card function. A “basic variant” was offered for 19 euros per year, a “platinum variant” supplemented by insurance benefits for 49 euros, until March 31, 2011 called Premium (each free of charge for Bahncard 100 holders). Reward points are awarded for sales with this card (one point for every € 2 sales with DB and one point for every € 3 sales with third parties), 1st class tickets earn 1.5 bonus points for each Euro with a Bahncard First with credit card function . The validity of the credit card corresponds to the validity of the Bahncard, but the credit card must be canceled separately when the Bahncard is canceled. The combined card shows the credit card number on the front and the Bahncard number in small print on the back. The card with credit card function is issued in addition to the normal Bahncard; Since April 1, 2010, the conditions of carriage have included the obligation to return the conventional Bahncard after receiving the card with credit card function. Since October 2013, the standard version of the credit card function has also been free of charge for holders of a Bahncard 25 or Bahncard 50 who have a Bahncard for 1st class.

Since August 2016, a “Bahncard credit card” has cost 34 euros as a basic card and the platinum card 64 euros; the credit card is free for holders of a Bahncard 1st class or a Bahncard 100.

Current tariff system

Since August 2003 there are three types of Bahncard : Bahncard 25 , Bahncard 50 and Bahncard 100 , each for 2nd and 1st class. Bahncard 25 and 50 1st class can also be used for 2nd class. In August 2005, the Youth BahnCard 25 was introduced for young people up to and including 18 years of age, which is valid for 1st and 2nd class. The My BahnCard 25 and My BahnCard 50 have been on offer for travelers up to and including 26 years of age since August 2015 .

The Bahncard 25/50 and the My BahnCard 25/50 are valid for one year and can only be purchased with a subscription . If they are not canceled no later than six weeks before the expiry date, their term is automatically extended by another year. There are exceptions to this rule for some business customers. The Bahncard 100 can be purchased for one year (advance payment of the entire sum) or as a monthly subscription (minimum term one year, can be canceled monthly thereafter). When renewing the Bahncard, the current conditions apply, which may differ from previous ones. You will only be notified if the changes came into effect in the last 4 weeks before the extension. The customer is then granted an extraordinary right of termination . He can terminate the contract within 4 weeks of receiving notification of the expiry of the period of validity.

In addition to its function as a discount card, the Bahncard can also be used as an identification card for online and mobile phone tickets and for payment by direct debit at the machine. Bahncard holders can book tickets using the Bahncard printed on the card or, for frequent travelers, via the bahn.bonus-comfort hotline.

Provisional Bahncard 50, bought at the counter in 2011

Bahncards can u. a. can be purchased at ticket offices, with a provisional Bahncard being issued for the immediate start of the journey. Since June 15, 2008, the provisional card can be printed out as an online ticket when ordering online .

When purchasing the Bahncard 25 and 50, you can also take out an insurance package (travel cost cancellation insurance, travel luggage insurance, accident insurance). Those who agree will regularly receive offers for passengers and opportunities to temporarily use their 2nd class Bahncard for 1st class.

At the end of 2008, 3.989 million Bahncards were in circulation, at the end of 2009 the number was 4.071 million.

According to the company, Bahncard data will be deleted one year after the respective card expires.

According to company information from 2015, all Bahncard customers within Germany use only green electricity. The electricity demand is determined accordingly and additionally purchased by DB Energie .

The Bahncard 50 costs (since December 15, 2013) for 2nd class 255 euros per year (1st class: 515 euros); This means that from a normal price of 510 euros in 2nd class (1030 euros in 1st class) the savings effect begins, provided no other savings prices, special offers or train cards are used. When the Bahncard 50 was introduced on August 1, 2003, in contrast to the Bahncard , children under 15 years of age could be taken along free of charge; every additional passenger (even without a Bahncard) traveled for half the normal price. The 33 percent discount on first-class tickets initially granted to holders of a Bahncard 50 second class has been abolished.

According to information provided by Deutsche Bahn, Bahncard 50 holders undertake an average of around fifty train journeys per year (as of 2007).

Bahncard 100

The card itself is used as a ticket - a separate ticket is not required. Car trains are excluded . To use trains that require reservation, such as the CNL trains (night trains), a reservation (subject to a fee) must also be booked with the Bahncard 100. Bahncard 100 customers automatically become bahn.bonus comfort customers, can have two pieces of luggage transported free of charge by the DB luggage service per calendar month and - where possible - take bicycles with them free of charge. For the latter, a free reservation is required for long-distance transport, but this cannot be booked online for this group of customers. New customers receive EUR 20 or EUR 10 starting credit for car and bike sharing, and car sharing can be used at business conditions (five percent discount on time and kilometer fees).

The Bahncard 100 costs EUR 3,952 for one year for 2nd class with immediate payment (1st class: EUR 6,685). The Bahncard 100 is also available as a subscription for 365 euros per month (1st class: 620 euros, as of January 2020), i.e. at a total price of 4,380 euros (1st class: 7,440 euros) per year. In the case of immediate payment, the Bahncard 100 is not automatically extended after one year and must be applied for again. The subscription is automatically renewed by one year if it is not canceled at least six weeks before it expires. Thereafter (i.e. after the first year), early termination can be given with six weeks' notice to the end of the following month.

Children under the age of 18 and their partners receive a Bahncard 25 (additional card) free of charge if an additional card is purchased for at least one child under 18 who lives in the household. The Bahncard 100 replaced the previously available range of different network cards as a uniform, personal offer.

The German Reichsbahn offered in 1939 an assortment of network cards for the whole network, 21 subnets (each about 7,000 kilometers route network) and 130 districts towards (1,100 km route network). They were each valid for one month and cost between 40 Reichsmarks (3rd class district card) and 320 Reichsmarks (entire network, 1st class). In addition, district partial monthly cards were available for 16 and 21 Reichsmarks (3rd and 2nd class).

A personal network card for 2nd class on the Deutsche Bundesbahn had cost 2,600 DM around 1964. In 1971 it cost 3,100 DM for the 2nd and 4,200 DM for the 1st class. In 1994, personal and transferable annual network cards as well as personal monthly cards were available for the entire network and for partial networks (each around 5,400 km in size). At the beginning of 1996 the personal 2nd class network card had cost 7,250 DM.

The Bahncard 100 was introduced on August 1, 2003 as the successor to the Personal NetzCard . It was later renamed Mobility Bahncard 100 and has been sold again under the name Bahncard 100 since April 1, 2011 . Since December 12, 2004 the Bahncard 100 has included the city ticket .

In 2003, after the card was introduced, the number of Bahncard 100 holders was around 14,000, and at the end of 2004 around 12,000. At the beginning of 2005 there were around 15,000 Bahncard 100 in circulation, at the beginning of 2008 there were around 29,000 and at the end of 2008 around 32,000. At the end of 2009 the number of Bahncard 100 holders was 35,000, in spring 2011 around 36,000 and in September 2012 around 40,000.

In April 2013, the network card had 41,000 holders. At that time, Deutsche Bahn was planning to introduce a reduced Bahncard 100 for seniors. It should cost more than half the regular price. Deutsche Bahn has not implemented these considerations. A reduced Bahncard 100 is not part of the offer for seniors.

By September 2014, the number of owners increased to almost 43,000. Most BahnCard 100 holders live in Berlin (as of January 2018), followed by Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Cologne and Munich. The highest density of owners in relation to the number of inhabitants is in Montabaur, followed by Siegburg, Frankfurt am Main and Mannheim. In the cities mentioned, there is one BahnCard 100 holder for every 300 inhabitants. The DB generated more than 220 million euros.

According to the company, a typical Bahncard 100 holder is male, over 40 years old, lives in a metropolitan area, drives around 200 times a year and often heads for the same destinations. Another larger group of users are weekend commuters with a long distance between home and place of work or study.

Tax and data protection

If the employer provides the annual pass without the travel costs saved for the employer at least equal to the value of the Bahncard, the full amount is taxed as a pecuniary benefit . The costs of the Bahncard 100 1st class exceed the cap of 4,500 euros for the distance flat rate for trips to the workplace, although the costs actually incurred for public transport can also be applied in accordance with Section 9 (2) EStG. If the Bahncard 100 First was only procured in the previous year, the cap remains at the limit.

An electronic key ( RFID ) for DB car sharing is integrated in the card . Data protectionists criticize that the company would not adequately point out this fact. The railway does not offer a card without a chip. Among other things, the company received a Big Brother Award in 2007 for the integration of the RFID chip and the compulsion to present a photo when purchasing . Since December 2012, no photos have been printed on the Bahncard 50.

Bahncard Business

A Bahncard for bahn.corporate customers has been offered as Bahncard Business since June 12, 2011 . Since the end of 2011, benefits for corporate customers such as discounts and extended ticket redemption periods have only been possible for holders of this Bahncard. As of February 1, 2020, the Bahncard 25 Business has cost 65.50 or 131 euros (2nd / 1st class) and the Bahncard 50 Business 293 or 586 euros. In contrast to other Bahncards, there is no subscription to the Bahncard Business ; it must be re-applied for every year.

Special promotions

On various occasions, Deutsche Bahn offered special types of Bahncard 25 with limited validity at a reduced price. Unless canceled, these cards will automatically be converted into a Bahncard 25 subscription after their expiry date.

In 2014, Deutsche Bahn offered a sample Bahncard 50 for the first time. The card, valid for four months, cost 95 euros and, like a sample Bahncard 25, became an automatic subscription.

According to information from Deutsche Bahn AG, a considerable proportion of the action Bahncard holders are switching to a regular Bahncard subscription.

On December 9, 2012, the validity was extended to include trips to the departure station. Previously this only related to the destination.

By early 2008, 100 million city tickets had been issued.

The areas of validity of the city ticket typically include airports that are not located on the outskirts, but can extend beyond the borders of smaller cities. The Deutsche Bahn refers to the local public transport companies. For example, while the area of validity in Hamburg, Munich and Cologne covers the entire city area, the city ticket in Berlin is only valid in tariff area A, which only covers around 10% of the city area.

The City-Ticket was developed on December 14, 2003 in cooperation between VDV , DB AG and the participating transport associations and introduced in 44 cities. Then other cities were added.

A city ticket was offered for Frankfurt am Main back in 1995 - regardless of a Bahncard. It was included in the ticket to Frankfurt free of charge if the departure station was outside the Rhein-Main transport network and allowed a free connection on the day of travel. It was also included in special offers such as the “ Good Evening Ticket ” or savings prices. The forerunner is the VÖV bus and train network card, which since 1985 has allowed for any number of trips on the local transport company to the IC destination within the city limits.

Bahncard and bus company

Before the tariff change in 2002, the Bahncard gave you a 50% discount. Since then, many bus companies, including those of Deutsche Bahn (DB Stadtverkehr), have waived the Bahncard (generally not in tariff groups where Bahncard recognition is regulated separately) with Bahncard 25 and 50, 25% of the regular fare. The Mobility Bahncard 100 is also valid as a ticket.

This applies to the following companies: Autokraft Kiel, Busverkehr Rhein-Neckar , Kraftverkehr GmbH, Omnibusverkehr Rhein-Nahe , Omnibusverkehr Franken , DB ZugBus Regionalverkehr Alb-Bodensee , Regionalbus Augsburg , Regionalbus Braunschweig , Regionalbus Ostbayern , Regionalbus Stuttgart , Rhein-Mosel Verkehrsgesellschaft , Regionalbus Saar-Westpfalz , regional traffic Upper Bavaria , regional bus traffic southwest , Südbadenbus , Verkehrsgesellschaft Untermain , Weser-Ems-Bus, regional traffic Allgäu (VG Oberallgäu with Kleinwalsertal ). The Bahncard is also recognized in the Bentheimer Eisenbahn buses to and from the Bad Bentheim and Gronau stations . Deutsche Bahn bus companies in Saxony and Brandenburg do not accept the Bahncard.

Railplus

Since December 9, 2007, the Railplus option has been included in the price when purchasing a Bahncard 25/50 . This means that travelers with the Bahncard - which without this option were previously only recognized in Germany and for cross-border trips to Austria and Switzerland as part of the TEE Rail Alliance - generally received a 25 percent discount on cross-border trips in some European countries. The option was included in the Bahncard 100 since 2002. The discount also applies to connecting trains abroad, but not to domestic journeys .

Rail cards with the Railplus option can be recognized by the RAIL + PLUS logo on the back. Holders of this Bahncard receive the discount in cross-border traffic to Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Romania , Switzerland, Serbia, Slovakia (ZSSK), Slovenia (SŽ), Spain, the Czech Republic (ČD), Republika Srpska and Hungary (only long-distance trains MÁV, GYSEV). For travelers under 26 years of age, the discount also applies in Norway and Spain and over 60 years of age also in Ireland, Spain and Norway.

Since mid-2016, RAILPLUS has not been recognized from / to border stations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, for example for the route Salzburg - Frankfurt or Rosenheim - Kufstein. This also applies to total rail network cards for the country of origin such as BahnCard 100 and ÖSTERREICHcard. If you book to the nearest train station (for Salzburg this is Elsbethen), you will receive the RAILPLUS discount.

The Railplus option was introduced on May 28, 2000 for 30 DM (15.34 euros). Until December 2007 the option cost 15 euros per year (Bahncard 25/50). With the Mobility Bahncard 100 and the bahn.bonus-comfort status, you received the Railplus option at no extra charge.

Since December 10, 2017, the Railplus discount has been 15 percent.

From December 2019, Railplus will no longer be recognized in Belgium.

With RAILPLUS there is no additional discount for children. They receive a 50% discount on the normal fare when abroad. BahnCard discounts, cancellation conditions and taking children with you differ from country to country.

Bahncard and DB subsidiaries as well as other railway companies

The Usedomer Bäderbahn (100% subsidiary of DB AG) only recognizes the Bahncard for journeys over 50 km. The stations of the Berlin S-Bahn GmbH (100% subsidiary of DB AG) are not all tariff points of the Deutsche Bahn. This means that it is not possible to issue a one-way ticket with a BC discount at all train stations.

On many local trains operated by private railway companies, the normal local transport tariff of Deutsche Bahn applies, including Bahncard discount, country tickets, etc.

The Bahncard is not valid on long-distance trains offered by private railway companies, such as B. in the vacation express or Flixtrain . These have their own tariffs that are independent of DB. Exceptions are sections in which these trains run as local trains (e.g. applies to sections of the Harz-Berlin-Express ).

In 2005, a Bahncard discount of 30 percent was granted on all Interconnex lines, although the operating company received no compensation for this.

Bahncard in transport associations and transport associations

In some transport associations and transport associations, the Bahncard is also recognized for journeys within the transport area. When using a BC25 or BC50 you get a 25% discount on the normal tariff of the network tariff. In networks where the rail tariff applies in parallel to the network tariff, a BC50 can offer a 50% discount on the rail tariff.

I.a. In the area of the following transport associations, the use of a Bahncard can lead to a lower fare:

Subscription and Cancellation

Bahncards 25 and 50 are sold by subscription . The Bahncard 100 can be purchased either as a subscription or as a single purchase. The business versions of Bahncards 25 and 50 are not sold by subscription; this also applied to the Bahncard for journalists sold until 2012.

The term of the Bahncards obtained by subscription is extended by one year if the subscription is not canceled at least six weeks before the Bahncard expires. Due to a lack of goodwill in the event of late termination, the offer may be canceled. a. called a subscription trap . In the event of price increases that relate to the subsequent Bahncards, the contractual relationship can be terminated within four weeks of notification. Only those subscribers can benefit from this extraordinary right of termination for whom this period falls within their expired notice period of six weeks. The changed conditions take effect when the new Bahncard is sent.

Subscription sales are criticized by consumer protection associations. Customers would not be sufficiently informed about the automatic extension of the term by one year when purchasing. For example, only one of nine samples in March 2010 clearly indicated the notice period. According to Karl-Peter Naumann from the Pro Bahn passenger association, complaints are decreasing .

The European Consumer Center Germany advises foreign holidaymakers in Germany who purchase a Bahncard to cancel this card as soon as the contract is concluded and to have the cancellation confirmed in writing.

Proof of the current Bahncard annual subscription can only be provided by presenting the physical Bahncard or downloading the Bahncard in the DB app. If no Bahncard can be presented in these forms for a ticket purchased with a Bahncard discount, the purchased ticket is invalid. It comes with the ticket control to a fare Acher raising the BahnCard customers, where he possibly as Dodger applies and has to pay an appropriate penalty. Deutsche Bahn does not accept any other possible proof of the annual subscription .

Organization within Deutsche Bahn

All organizational and administrative services of the Bahncard are looked after by the Bahncard Service department of DB Fernverkehr AG . Until 2008, the Bahncard service was located in Schortens ; today it is located in Frankfurt am Main as part of DB Fernverkehr .
