Soccer World Cup 2014 / Germany
This article covers the German national soccer team at the 2014 soccer world championship . Germany took part in the final round for the eighteenth time and in a World Cup in South America for the third time . The only world championships so far ( 1930 and 1950 ) in which Germany did not take part also took place in South America. Since winning the final on July 13, Germany is the second European team after Spain ( South Africa 2010 ) to be world champions outside of Europe and the first to win the title on the American continent .
qualification
The team qualified for the World Cup in Brazil through the qualifying matches of the European football association UEFA .
Games
In the first round hit Germany in Group C in Sweden , Austria , Ireland , Kazakhstan and the Faroe Islands . In the ten encounters that resulted, Germany had nine wins and one draw against Sweden, with the German team reaching only one draw for the first time despite a 4-0 lead (4: 4). With a 3-0 win against Ireland on the penultimate matchday, the team qualified ahead of time as group winners for the World Cup finals. The biggest win in the group stage was a 6-1 away win over Ireland, with Ireland adding the biggest home defeat. Only in the last group game in Sweden did the team temporarily fall behind. Germany scored the most goals of all European teams, but also had to accept the most goals from all directly qualified European teams. A total of 10 players scored the German goals, of which Mesut Özil scored the most with 8 goals, placing him in third place on the European goalscoring list with three other players. On September 6, 2013 Miroslav Klose scored his 68th international goal with a 1-0 win against Austria, equaling Gerd Müller's record . In total, national coach Joachim Löw used 23 players and thus, like Belgium, the fewest players of all qualified teams. Only goalkeepers Manuel Neuer , Mesut Özil and Thomas Müller were used in all ten games, of which only Neuer played the full distance in all games, while Özil was substituted eight minutes before the end of the game in the last game against Sweden and Müller only in four Playing the full distance played.

preparation
In preparation for the World Cup, four friendlies were planned, the last of which was a benefit game. Between the second and third game, from May 21st to 31st, 2014, a training camp took place in the Passeier Valley in South Tyrol , in which the U-20 national team also took part as a test match opponent. An expanded squad of 28 players for the training camp was named by national coach Löw on May 8th. This had to be reduced to 23 players after the training camp. In the 6-1 win against Armenia, Klose scored his 69th international goal and is now the sole record scorer for the German national team. After the last game, they left for Brazil , where the entire DFB team moved into their base camp in Campo Bahia .

On May 22, 2014, Lars Bender suffered a thigh injury in training camp and was therefore unable to participate in the World Cup. Joachim Löw waived a subsequent nomination. After the friendly against Cameroon on June 1, 2014, Löw Shkodran deleted Mustafi , Marcel Schmelzer and Kevin Volland from the squad. In the international benefit match against Armenia on June 6, 2014, Marco Reus suffered a partial tear in the anterior syndesmosis ligament above the left ankle and was therefore unable to participate in the tournament. When the final round was drawn on 6 December 2013, Germany was selected as one of eight teams due to its placement in the FIFA world rankings from October 2013 and was drawn as the head of Group G. Lost were delivered Ghana , the USA and Portugal - the latter side's Geoff Hurst , the protection of the Wembley gate . Germany played the last group game against Ghana at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa on June 23, 2010 and reached the round of 16 with a 1-0 win. The USA, trained by the former national coach Jürgen Klinsmann , were last opposed on June 2, 2013 on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the US Football Association in a friendly game that was lost 3: 4. At World Championships, Germany and the USA met in the group stage in 1998 (2-0 for Germany) and in 2002 in the quarter-finals (1-0 for Germany). Portugal was last opponent in the first group game of the European Championship finals on June 9, 2012, with Germany winning 1-0. At world championships, both met each other once, in the game for third place at the 2006 World Cup, which Germany won 3-1. For the first time, Germany did not play a team in the group stage that has never been played at a World Cup. Before the draw, both Jürgen Klinsmann and Portugal's top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo expressed their wish not to meet Germany, while Kevin-Prince Boateng wanted Germany and his half-brother Jérôme Boateng as group opponents again.
Accommodation for the German team was the Campo Bahia , which they moved into on June 8th. The first group game was the 100th World Cup game for Germany, making it the first nation to reach this limit. All venues up to the quarter-finals were on the Atlantic coast with minimum temperatures in June of 22 ° C and maximum temperatures of up to 29.6 ° C and a relative humidity of 82 to 85%. The game in Fortaleza was the closest game to the equator in the history of the national team. Germany had not played any games in one of the three group venues before the World Cup.

statistics
- The first round game against Portugal was the 100th World Cup game for Germany, which was the first country to reach this mark.
- In the second round match against Ghana, Miroslav Klose set the World Cup goal record of 15 goals two minutes after coming on as a substitute by scoring a 2-2 final score, which Ronaldo had held since 2006 - also with a goal against Ghana. His goal in the semifinals against Brazil made him the sole record goal scorer with 16 goals.
- Germany was the first team to reach the semi-finals for the fourth time in a row. Miroslav Klose was the first player to make four semi-finals.
- Germany reached the final of a World Cup for the eighth time, setting a new record.
- Germany was the only team to play in six different cities.
- With the 7-1 victory in the semi-finals against Brazil, Germany overtook the Brazilians in the number of goals scored at World Cups and after the final had scored three more goals than Brazil with 224 goals.
- With 18: 4 goals Germany achieved its best hit rate at world championships and equalized the goal record set by Brazil at the 2002 World Cup in the seven games that have been common since 1974 until the world championship title. The DFB-Elf only scored more goals in the six games up to the title win in 1954 (25:14).
- The 18 German hits were distributed among eight players ( Thomas Müller , Mats Hummels , Sami Khedira , Mario Götze , André Schürrle , Mesut Özil , Miroslav Klose and Toni Kroos ). This put the DFB-Elf in second place in the ranking of teams with the highest number of goalscorers in the tournament, behind the Netherlands (nine goalscorers) and ahead of Colombia, France and Belgium (six goalscorers each).
- Thomas Müller scored the 2,000th goal for the German national team with a 1-0 win against Brazil.
- Eight players had won the U-21 ( Jérôme Boateng , Benedikt Höwedes , Mats Hummels, Sami Khedira, Mesut Özil and Manuel Neuer ) and the U-17 European championship (Mario Götze and Shkodran Mustafi ) in 2009 . Götze's goal was the last of 32 goals scored by substitutes during the tournament; more than at any previous World Cup. With his three goals, André Schürrle set a new goal record for German substitutes at world championships.
- Germany took the lead in the FIFA world rankings after winning the World Cup . In the course of the tournament, the DFB-Elf had defeated the teams (Brazil, Portugal, Argentina) that had been in 3rd to 5th place in the world rankings; Spain as the defending champion and the first in the ranking to date in front of the second-placed German team had already been eliminated after the group stage.

Victory celebration
The return flight to Germany took place on July 15th in a Lufthansa charter plane, which was labeled with "Siegerflieger Fanhansa". After flying over the fan mile at the Brandenburg Gate at a height of around 600 meters and landing in Berlin-Tegel , a trip on an open truck trailer to the reception at the fan mile followed. An estimated half a million people are said to have gathered there. The players as well as their coaches and supervisors took the stage to celebrate with the trophy and to thank the fans for their support.
At the victory celebration, some national players - in a variation of similar performances at previous fan festivals - performed a song and dance to the melody of the children's song "I know a cowboy". This later became known as the "gaucho dance" and was referred to in various media as a tasteless mockery of the Argentinians who were defeated in the final. With DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach and the players involved, Toni Kroos and Shkodran Mustafi, this interpretation was met with incomprehension. Many comments, including in the international press, pointed to the consistently fair behavior of the German team during the tournament and the widespread use of catch singing.
The guest star at the victory celebration of the German footballers was the pop singer Helene Fischer , who performed her hit “ Breathless through the night ” (with a different text, adapted to the occasion) .
