from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the English national football team at the 2014 World Cup . England took part in the finals for the 14th time and for the third time in a finals in South America . England could not qualify for the final round in 1978 in South America.

qualification

England played in European qualifying Group H . Opponents were Ukraine , Montenegro , Poland , Moldova and San Marino . England were unbeaten with six wins and four draws group winners, but only qualified for the final round on the last day of the game, because although they could win heavily against the weaker teams Moldova and San Marino, it was initially only enough to draw against their direct competitors. Only in the last two games against Montenegro and Poland could the opponents be defeated. The second-placed Ukrainian team, against which there were two draws, failed in the playoff games of the group runners-up to France.

Venues (red) and quarters (blue)

In the draw for the final round on 6 December 2013, England was allocated to Pot 4 with the unseeded European teams due to its placement in the FIFA world rankings in October 2013 and group D with Uruguay, Italy and Costa Rica. This was the first time that three former world champions were in a preliminary group at a World Cup finals. England last played against Uruguay on March 1, 2006 in a friendly and won 2-1 in Liverpool . The last time they met at World Championships was in 1966 in the goalless opening game. In 1954, England met world champions Uruguay in the quarter-finals and lost 4-2. The overall balance against Uruguay was negative with three draws and three wins as well as four defeats before the World Cup. The last competitive match between England and Italy was the quarter-finals of the Euro 2012, in which England traditionally lost the penalty shoot-out after a goalless outcome . On August 15, 2012, there was another friendly game that England won 2-1. The only World Cup game between the two teams so far was the game for third place in 1990, which Italy won 2-1. In a total of 24 matches before the World Cup, there were 8 wins for England, 7 draws and 9 wins for Italy. There was no game against Costa Rica before the World Cup.

The team's quarters were the Royal Tulip in Rio de Janeiro .
