Wigan Athletic (2001-07)

Although Baines had already gained experience at Everton in his youth, Wigan Athletic offered him better prospects and so the young winger moved on August 1, 2001 to the youth department of the "Latics". He gained his first professional league experience with the third division team in the 2002/03 season, when he played six championship appearances towards the end of the promotion season. He made his debut before his promotion to the professional squad on October 2, 2002 against the Premier League club West Bromwich Albion in the League Cup . The game was won 3-1 and Baines showed himself to be a ball-safe left-back with strengths in passing and tackling. Baines received a two-year contract and by the second half of the 2003/04 season, the fast and strong offensive defensive talent won a regular place in Wigan. For the second time in a row, he won the club's “best young player of the season” award. In addition, Baines, who is relatively small at 1.70 meters, made a name for himself in the second-rate Football League Championship with precise flanks in the two years up to 2005 and thus contributed to promotion to the Premier League . During the 2004/05 season he scored his first professional goal with a long shot, although the game was lost on December 21, 2004 against Ipswich Town 2-1.

In February 2005, he had already renewed his contract with Wigan, despite having been associated with well-known clubs such as Manchester United , Arsenal FC and Everton FC. He made his first division debut on August 14, 2005 (1st matchday) in the 0-1 defeat at home against Chelsea . In the top English league, Baines had few adjustment difficulties and confirmed his will to long-term commitment with a further extension of his contract. In addition to a good 10th place in the table , he reached the final of the League Cup , which was clearly lost 4-0 to Manchester United. Against this club he succeeded in the following season, on October 14, 2006 (8th matchday), in the 1: 3 home defeat, his first goal. While Wigan struggled to stay in the league, Baines matured - not least because of his constant involvement in the U-21 selection - into one of the best English players in his position.

Transfer rumors increased again during the summer of 2007 and Baines was associated with Newcastle United , Sunderland AFC and Everton FC; The latter announced on August 6, 2007 - after the signing of Phil Jagielka and Steven Pienaar - the move from Baines for a transfer fee of five million pounds, plus a further million in the event of certain positive developments in the new club.

Everton FC (until 2020)

Due to injury, Baines missed a number of games at Everton FC in the 2007/08 season and had two opponents on the left defender with Nuno Valente and Joleon Lescott . In the 2008/09 season he won a regular place and harmonized better and better with the Pienaar used on the outside before him. He converted a penalty kick in the FA Cup semi-finals against Manchester United, made it into the final and lost 2-1 to Chelsea .

On January 27, 2014, Baines agreed on a new four-year contract with Everton FC.

On July 27, 2020, the club announced that left-back Leighton Baines would end his career at the end of the 2019/20 season. Leighton Baines played 420 games in the Premier League , 348 of them in the Everton jersey .

National team

Baines graduated from 2004 his first caps for the U-21 team and contributed as a scorer in the first playoff on 6 October 2006 against Germany to qualify for the 2007 European Championship at where he in the three group matches and semi-finals , in which 12 : 13 defeat on penalties against the Netherlands , was used.

With his sporting breakthrough at FC Everton in 2008/09, Fabio Capello appointed him to the A-squad of the "Three Lions" for the first time in 2009 . He made his international debut on March 3, 2010 in a 3-1 win in the international test match against Egypt . In this encounter he completed 90 minutes after the two competitors Ashley Cole (injury) and Wayne Bridge (retirement from the national team) were not (no longer) available for the left full-back position. For the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Baines was part of the provisional 30-man squad, but Capello preferred Stephen Warnock as a substitute in the final 23-player tournament squad behind regular player Ashley Cole .
