Stephen Warnock (born December 12, 1981 in Ormskirk ) is an English football player . The defender, who is mostly on the left wing today, learned to play football at Liverpool FC . His final sporting breakthrough came in 2007 with the Blackburn Rovers before he moved to Aston Villa in August 2009 . Warnock has been under contract with Burton Albion since summer 2017 .

Athletic career

Liverpool FC (1998-2007)

Warnock comes from the Liverpool Youth Academy and was initially active in the central midfield . From there he only moved to the left with the "Reds" in the later years, where he held the outside position in defense and midfield.

Although Warnock was one of the most promising talents in the club with his appointments to English youth national teams, he initially waited in vain for his first professional appearance with the "Reds" and gained his first experience at the then second-rate Bradford City , where his club took him for two months shortly before he turned 21 .Birthday borrowed. At the "Bantams" he made his debut on September 14, 2002 against FC Walsall (1-0), scored his first goal just under a month later against Sheffield Wednesday (1: 2) and returned to Merseyside after a total of twelve appearances. In the remaining games of the 2002/03 season, however, he remained unconsidered in Liverpool and was given the opportunity to get more match practice again at a loan club. He played the entire 2003/04 round at Coventry City - also in the second division - and was a top performer with 44 appearances (42 of which were in the starting line-up), which prompted the fans there to award Warnock the “best player” in the end .

The long-awaited debut for Liverpool followed shortly afterwards for Warnock on August 10, 2004 against Grazer AK in the third round of the Champions League qualification and four days later he made his debut in the Premier League with a short stint for around ten minutes against Tottenham Hotspur . Liverpool coach Rafael Benítez gave him further chances and with his performances he temporarily pushed the more experienced Australian international Harry Kewell onto the bench. Nevertheless, he was left out of the squad in the Champions League victory in Istanbul against AC Milan , although after the start in Graz he had played in five other (but always less important) European Cup games.

From the 2005/06 season Warnock was increasingly needed as a left defender and there he now played in "rotation" with the Norwegian John Arne Riise . During this time he also scored his only goal for Liverpool in the 5-1 win against Fulham on March 15, 2006. Further development steps failed to materialize, however, and so Warnock moved to league rivals Blackburn Rovers in January 2007 .

Blackburn Rovers (2007-09)

Already in the summer of 2006 speculation had been made about a possible swap deal with Blackburn's team captain Lucas Neill , and rumors continued in the following winter until Neill finally accepted an offer from West Ham United . Nevertheless, Warnock switched to the Rovers; The parties involved kept silent about the exact amount of the transfer fee.

Four days after a 4-0 win in the FA Cup against Luton Town , Warnock played against Chelsea (0-3) for the first time for Blackburn in the Premier League and only three days later he received a yellow-red card against Sheffield United (2: 1) the first expulsion of his professional career. Within a short time, Warnock developed a good reputation with the Rovers supporters thanks to his tackling strength and flank runs, became an English national player and signed a new four-year contract that would bind him until the end of the 2011/12 season. However, it was only one year left. In a turbulent 2008/09 season, he left his traditional left-back position frequently when coach Paul Ince initially needed his creative moments in central midfield. The experiment failed and since his representative Martin Olsson on the left-wing defense did not know how to convince, Warnock took over his originally intended role again. After Ince's dismissal, his successor Sam Allardyce Warnock moved back into midfield to improve the duel strength in this part of the team.

Aston Villa (since 2009)

On August 27, 2009, one day after confirmation of ongoing transfer talks with Aston Villa , the club's management in Birmingham announced the signing of Stephen Warnock and the signing of a four-year contract. The newcomer quickly fitted in with Martin O'Neill's team , played 30 league games straight away in the 2009/10 season and reached the final in the league cup . There he was defeated by defending champions Manchester United 1: 2 with the “Villans” and had to take criticism after the game, as a large part of the opponent's dangerous moments ran through “his” left defense - especially in the duel with Antonio Valencia .

After half a year on loan with Bolton Wanderers , he was finally transferred to Leeds United in January 2013 .

English national team

Although he had only played a few games from the start at Liverpool FC, Warnock was appointed to the English national team for the first phase of qualifying for the 2006 World Cup on August 29, 2005 , due to a lack of left defenders at that time in the team. For the squad for the World Cup itself, however, he was not considered and only in May 2008 did he return to the field of vision of the "Three Lions" under the new national coach Fabio Capello on the occasion of two friendlies against the USA and Trinidad & Tobago . On June 1, 2008, he came here against the last named opponent in the 84th minute for Wayne Bridge for the first A international game.

After good impressions at Aston Villa, Capello nominated him again for a friendly against Egypt and after the resignation of Wayne Bridge and the injury problems of Ashley Cole in May 2010 in the provisional 30-man squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa . After he was not used in the tournament itself, he celebrated his comeback on November 17, 2010 against France .
