Ashley Cole (born December 20, 1980 in Stepney , London ) is a former English football player . As a left defender, he was characterized by a high speed of acceleration, with which he often switched to the offensive actions of his team via the outside position. Cole was last under contract with Derby County .

Club career

Arsenal FC and Crystal Palace (1997-2006)

Ashley was born in 1980 in Stepney , London . He began his career as a soccer player as a teenager at his home club Arsenal . On February 25, 2000 he signed a professional contract there after making his debut for the first team on November 30, 1999 against Middlesbrough FC at the age of 18. However, this mission should not be followed by another for Arsenal for the rest of the season. Before he finally made his breakthrough at Arsenal in the 2000/01 season, he was loaned to Crystal Palace between February and May 2000 , where he scored a goal in 14 league games. On his return he finally benefited from the fact that the regular left-back Sylvinho injured himself and Ashley represented him so well from autumn 2000 that he kept this position even after Sylvinho had recovered.

At the side of Tony Adams and Sol Campbell , Cole was now an integral part of the Arsenal defense, who won the "double" of the English championship and FA Cup in 2002 and the English Cup again in the following two years, and in 2004 as the undefeated champion won another league title. In addition to his defensive skills, the 23-year-old left full-back also had great advantages on the offensive in cooperation with Thierry Henry and Robert Pires . Arsenal FC's collection of titles was rounded off by a Cup final win against Manchester United in 2005 , with Cole converting his attempt on penalties at the Millennium Stadium .

During the 2005/06 season, Cole had to sit out due to injury. At the end of the season he returned to the Champions League final against FC Barcelona , where he lost 2-1 with his team. This was his last competitive game for Arsenal; Gaël Clichy had already emerged as the successor to the willing Cole in the recent past .

The controversial move

In 2005, Cole got in touch with Arsenal rival Chelsea FC, where a possible change of club Coles was discussed. For doing so without informing his then current employer, Arsenal, he was fined by the Premier League on June 2, 2005 with a fine of £ 100,000 for a specific meeting by Cole - in the presence of his advisor Jonathan Barnett - with Chelsea coach José Mourinho and CEO Peter Kenyon was considered evidence of contract negotiations. The appeal process in August 2005 did not change the guilty verdict, but the fine was reduced to £ 75,000. Chelsea FC and Mourinho themselves received fines of £ 300,000 and £ 200,000, respectively, whereby in the latter case, the appeal also resulted in the reduction to £ 75,000. Barnett's license as a player's agent was revoked for a period of 18 months and he, too, was fined £ 100,000.

Cole signed a one-year contract extension with Arsenal on July 18, 2005, but left the club a year later in great bitterness. On July 18, 2006, he opened a public verbal exchange of blows when he published parts of his autobiography in the tabloid " The Sun " in which he raised serious allegations against the Arsenal board. There he complained that the club's management had made him a “scapegoat” and that they had “thrown him to the sharks” during the change affair. In the official team photo for the 2006/07 season, Cole was excluded, fueling public pressure that Cole would be a Chelsea player in the near future.

On July 28th, Arsenal Vice Chairman David Dein announced that Arsenal were in negotiations with Chelsea related to the player Ashley Cole. However, there was great disagreement over the transfer fee as Chelsea FC insisted not to increase their £ 16m bid and Arsenal FC demanded £ 25m. The negotiations lasted for almost the whole of August and when the negotiations threatened to come to nothing, both clubs agreed that Cole would move to Chelsea for £ 5m and William Gallas would move from Chelsea to Arsenal as compensation. Officially, the transfer was only made perfect after the end of the transfer period and the change was only officially confirmed an hour and a half after the deadline .

Chelsea FC (2006-2014)

Cole received the jersey number 3 at Chelsea and came for the first time on September 9, 2006 as a substitute for Wayne Bridge in the 2-1 win against Charlton Athletic in his new team. In a public statement he made conciliatory statements to his old employer, but when he first faced Arsenal with Chelsea on December 10 at Stamford Bridge, he was met with great opposition from opposing supporters, which was mainly expressed in the fact that that they waved fake 20 pound notes - with his likeness on them - and mocked him as "Cashley". However, this did not change his good performance in this game. Overall, Cole was able to establish himself in the regular formation of Chelsea and attracted attention, especially in the game against Manchester United at Old Trafford , when he fought an exciting duel with the Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo in a 1-1 draw .

On January 31, 2007, Cole suffered a knee injury in the 3-0 championship home win against Blackburn Rovers , which after diagnosis turned out to be less severe than previously assumed. The comeback planned for the end of the season could finally be realized and Cole was back on the field in the last twelve minutes of the FA Cup final against Manchester United in the new Wembley Stadium - although coach Mourinho had previously categorically excluded his participation in the final.

After Cole had dueled with Wayne Bridge for the left-back position, he won the regular place after his injury and reached the Champions League final against Manchester United in Moscow with the "Blues" - despite good nerves in the penalty shootout, his second European final experience also ended with a defeat. Under the new coach Luiz Felipe Scolari , Cole played at times more offensively than ever in his career, but after his resignation he returned to his traditional place in left-back under successor Guus Hiddink .

Shortly after his fifth FA Cup triumph, Cole signed a new four-year contract with Chelsea in September 2009. On February 10, 2010, he broke his left ankle in a game against Everton , which resulted in a forced break for months.

On May 19, 2012, Cole celebrated the greatest triumph in Chelsea's history and won the UEFA Champions League in Munich against FC Bayern Munich. He played in defense and leveled the score 3: 2 for Bayern on penalties to 3: 3.

AS Roma (2014-2016)

After Cole had not renewed his contract with Chelsea , which had expired in summer 2014, he moved to the Italian capital for AS Roma . There he signed a contract that ran until the summer of 2016, which was terminated in January 2016.

Change to the MLS

On January 27, 2016 joined Cole is the MLS - franchise LA Galaxy on.

Derby County and resignation as a player (2019)

In January 2019, Cole returned to England and signed with the second division Derby County . After his contract was not renewed, he had been without a club since July and ended his career as a footballer in August.

National team

Cole played for various English youth teams and took part in 1999 with the U-20 national team at the Junior World Cup in Argentina . Although there were well-known names in their own ranks with Stuart Taylor , Peter Crouch , Andy Johnson and Matthew Etherington , the team ended up in last place in the group stage and did not score a single goal in their three defeats. For the U-21 national team, he ran in four games and scored one goal.

For the senior team, Cole made his debut on March 28, 2001 against Albania and was then in all five England games at the 2002 World Cup . At Euro 2004 in Portugal he even made it into the tournament's all-star team and he was also a regular at the World Cup in Germany two years later , where he and his team ultimately failed in the quarter-finals in the Portuguese selection .

On February 6, 2013, he made his 100th international match in a 2-1 win against Brazil . After he was not considered for the 2014 World Cup, he announced his retirement from the national team on May 11, 2014. In total, he played 107 international matches for England, making it the fifth most games for his country.
