He was in the 2000s as one of the best left -back in English football and won with Chelsea once each, the English Championship ( 2005 ), the FA Cup ( 2007 ) and the League Cup ( 2007 ). In addition, he completed 36 full international matches for the English national team and took part in two world championships ( 2002 and 2006 ) and one European championship ( 2004 ).

Career

societies

Southampton FC (1998-2003)

Bridge began his footballing career in his home country at Southampton FC , having previously learned his trade at Olivers Battery . In January 1998 he signed a professional contract and on August 16, 1998 he made his debut against Liverpool by substitution for John Beresford after his serious knee injury. Originally used in left midfield, he was quickly retrained as a full-back and in this position he ousted the experienced Francis Benali from the regular formation after the arrival of new coach Glenn Hoddle in 2000 . He scored his first goal for the "Saints" with a free kick against Wimbledon FC on May 14, 2000 and in the two seasons from 2000 to 2002 he did not miss a game. He was considered one of the best players in his club and in addition to steady appointments in the English U-21 team, he also made it into the squad of the senior national team, which went to Japan and South Korea for the 2002 World Cup. Above all, he was characterized by consistency and with his good ball handling as well as the qualities on the defensive and in the attack through cross runs he was next to Ashley Cole the best English left-back of his time. In Southampton he harmonized well with Chris Marsden before him in the 2002/03 season and together the club reached a remarkable eighth league place and in the FA Cup the final against Arsenal (0-1). On January 18, 2003, his series of 113 Premier League games against Liverpool came to an end without interruption.

Chelsea FC (2003-09)

In mid-2003 Bridge moved to league rivals Chelsea for £ 7 million as one of the first signings in Roman Abramovich's era . The first year for the "Blues" was very positive for him. He was a regular at left-back, was only represented on a few occasions by Celestine Babayaro and his team-up with winger Damien Duff , who was signed on the same day as he, shaped Chelsea's good left side. A personal highlight for Bridge was his decisive goal in the Champions League , which enabled him to advance in the second leg of the quarter-finals at Arsenal .

Bridge suffered its first real setbacks in the 2004/05 season. Initially, he was part of a robust defensive line that conceded just eight goals in the first 27 Premier League games. In February 2005 he suffered a double broken ankle in the FA Cup against Newcastle United , which ended his season prematurely. He missed the victorious final in the League Cup , but to win the English championship he had contributed enough to officially receive a title medal with 15 league appearances. The commitment of the Spaniard Asier del Horno for the 2005/06 season provided Bridge for additional competition and even when the latter did not act to the satisfaction of coach José Mourinho , Bridge did not return to the team after his recovery with the exception of two cup games. Instead, Mourinho put the trained central defender William Gallas on the left side and in order not to jeopardize his ambitions for the upcoming World Cup finals in Germany (and due to the general lack of match practice), Bridge switched to league rivals Fulham in January 2006 on loan . He helped the "Cottagers", supervised by Chris Coleman , to a secure midfield position before returning to Chelsea in May of the same year.

The prospect of a long-term future at Chelsea seemed permanently tarnished when the England team's left-back Ashley Cole was brought in, but Bridge fitted in well with the role of substitute player. He even signed a new four-year contract and had a significant share in winning the two national cup trophies. In both finals he was in the starting line-up and he contributed a part to the final in the semi-finals of the league cup. He also benefited from temporary injury concerns at Cole and his own ability to alternatively help out in left midfield. In March 2007 he had to undergo knee surgery before returning in the closing stages of the season.

Since Cole was in great shape in the 2007/08 season, Bridge was only 19 times in Chelsea's starting line-up, although largely symptom-free and consistently appointed to the English national team. The highlight was his return to the final in the League Cup , which was lost 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur . Six months later, the Blues Bridge moved to Manchester City . The transfer fee was ten million pounds and as with his previous transfer to Chelsea, "City" with a new financially strong owner on the "Shopping Tour" quickly became aware of him - Bridges teammate Shaun Wright-Phillips was in Manchester in the summer of 2008 changed.

Manchester City and Retired (2009-14)

Bridge immediately conquered the regular position as a left-back, although this position had been considered a weak point by the "Citizens" for several years. Hopes for a permanent revival of his career at the highest level were not fulfilled, however, because a knee injury in December 2009 put him out of action for two months and then groin problems for another month. In addition, his performances were generally not stable, which was also due to the media pressure that was exerted on him in the context of the " John Terry Affair". In terms of sport, the ambitious goal of qualifying for the Champions League with fifth place in the Premier League was missed. In the 2010/11 season, Bridge fell well behind Gaël Clichy , Aleksandar Kolarov and Pablo Zabaleta in the pecking order for coach Roberto Mancini and in January 2011 he was loaned to West Ham United until the end of the season.

After another loan station at first division AFC Sunderland from the end of January 2012, in which he made it into the starting eleven only three times in the Premier League until the end of the season, he was able to at the next station Brighton & Hove Albion in the season 2012/13 second division to revive his career once again. This was followed by the change to the also second-rate Reading FC for the 2013/14 season . Here he ended his playing career after another year. He was rarely used in Reading due to knee problems.

National team

During his time at Southampton FC, Bridge matured into one of the best left-backs in English football in the early 2000s and was predicted to have a long career in the national team. After appearances in the U-18 and U-21 selection, he made his debut in February 2002 for the "Three Lions" in a game against the Netherlands and, surprisingly, shortly afterwards he was even part of the English squad for the World Cup finals in Japan and South korea . There he was substituted on twice and consistently nominated in the following years, although he was usually only left with the role of substitute behind regular player Ashley Cole . The distribution of tasks was identical at Euro 2004 in Portugal and Bridge always had to sit on the reserve bench.

During qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Bridge was often in the left midfield. This position was considered problematic in the English game. However, Bridge did not get beyond the status of the gap filler and ultimately his Chelsea colleague Joe Cole took the place again after he had recovered from an injury. After failing to qualify for Euro 2008 , he played his 36th and last A international match against Brazil on November 14, 2009 . He had scored his only goal five and a half years earlier against Iceland (6-1). In February 2010 he announced his resignation as a result of media coverage of the alleged affair between his then-girlfriend and his national team colleague John Terry.
