John George Terry (born December 7, 1980 in Barking , London ) is a former English football player and current coach . He was team captain and central defender for Chelsea from 1998 to 2017 . In addition, he was England national team from 2003 to 2012 and from August 2006 to February 2010 and from March 2011 to February 2012 team captain of the "Three Lions".

Career as a player

Born in Barking in East London , John Terry attended Eastbury Comprehensive School and took his first steps in football at a small club called Senrab FC . There, Bobby Zamora and Jlloyd Samuel, other future Premier League players gathered . At the age of 14, Terry joined the youth division of Chelsea FC. He initially developed into a robust midfielder until a personnel emergency ensured that he withdrew to the central defender position, which would then become his regular position in the further course of his career.

Chelsea FC

As a substitute, Terry made his debut on October 28, 1998 in the League Cup against Aston Villa (4-1). In the further course of the 1998/99 season, his first league game followed on December 26, 1998 against FC Southampton (2-0) and in an FA Cup third-round game against Oldham Athletic on January 2, 1999 (2-0) his first game from beginning to. Nevertheless, the breakthrough was still a long time coming; in 2000 Terry moved briefly on loan to Nottingham Forest to collect match practice there.

From November 2000 Terry came to more and more games at Chelsea and after 23 appearances in the starting lineup, the club voted him Player of the Year. This early honor and also the later high recognition at Chelsea was largely due to the high degree of identification in the own appendix as the only English top player from the own youth department. His development continued in the 2001/02 season and at the side of the French national player Marcel Desailly he became a regular on the defensive. At the end of the season, Terry managed to make it into the FA Cup final with Chelsea, but the young defender was initially unable to take part due to a virus infection. It was only in the second half that he came on as a substitute and ended the game with a 2-0 defeat by Arsenal . On December 5, 2001, he had previously led his team as captain on the field for the first time in the championship game against Charlton Athletic .

In the early phase of his career, Terry was together with his teammate Jody Morris and Des Byrne from FC Wimbledon involved in an incident at a night club in west London. After a brawl, he was charged with ill-treatment and assault, but was later acquitted of these charges. During the process, however, he was suspended from English national teams by the FA Football Association . Terry and his Chelsea colleagues Frank Lampard , Jody Morris, Eiður Guðjohnsen and ex-teammate Frank Sinclair had previously molested US tourists in a drunken state because of the terrorist attacks in a hotel near London Heathrow Airport in September 2001 ; the penalty of two weeks' wages went to a fund for the victims of 9/11.

In the 2003/04 season , the athletic rise of Terrys meant that coach Claudio Ranieri named him as a permanent deputy for the captaincy and the young player wore the armband when Desailly had to pause. During the absence of the French, he convinced with good performances and formed an effective defender pair, especially with William Gallas . After Desailly's departure for the 2004/05 season , Chelsea's new coach José Mourinho appointed him team captain. With the axis around Terry, Lampard, Didier Drogba , Claude Makélélé and Petr Čech , the team won the English championship with a margin of twelve points; the defense conceded only 15 goals in the entire championship round. His colleagues from the English players 'association PFA finally voted him England's Footballer of the Year ("PFA Players' Player of the Year"). In the same game year Terry was named the best defender in the Champions League . He had scored a late winning goal in the game against FC Barcelona ; he scored a total of eight goals in the season. In September 2005, he was nominated for the FIFPro world selection , which is based on a selection of professional footballers in 40 countries. In the following season 2005/06 Terry defended the English championship with Chelsea. Also, the defense to captain Terry had to accept only 22 goals against in the league and distanced the runner-up Manchester United by eight points.

The 2006/07 season began with a curiosity for Terry when he had to fill in for the injured substitute goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini in stoppage time in a game against Reading FC on October 14, 2006 , because he swallowed his tongue after a defensive action and remained unconscious was. On November 5, 2006 Terry received with a yellow and red card in the defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, the first suspension in his professional career and commented publicly critical of referee Graham Poll . Terry pleaded "guilty" and had to pay a fine of 10,000 pounds along with an apology to Poll's address when the FA proceeded. The problems continued, and Terry was unable to play a few games at the turn of the year due to a back injury and disc surgery. He made his comeback on February 3, 2007 against Charlton Athletic and was for the first time in three months against Middlesbrough FC again over the entire 90 minutes on the field. This was followed by an ankle injury in the Champions League round of 16 against FC Porto , which threatened Terry to miss the league cup final. Within a few days, however, it was able to show itself to be operational again surprisingly quickly. On February 25, 2007 Terry suffered another painful setback in the English league cup final against Arsenal . When trying to score a diving header after a corner kick, Abou Diaby hit him with a stretched foot and full span on the lower jaw so hard that he swallowed his tongue and fell unconscious on the ground. His condition stabilized again during the drive to the hospital. But he was able to celebrate the later 2-1 victory of his team again. Terry ended the season with his third Champions League semi-finals appearance in four years. He also completed the first FA Cup final at the new Wembley Stadium with Chelsea , which was won 1-0 aet against Manchester United.

After the negotiations for a new contract with Chelsea had stalled at the end of the 2006/07 season, Terry said several times that he still did not intend to leave the club. In late July 2007, he finally signed a new five-year contract with a weekly salary of between £ 131,000 and £ 135,000, making him the highest-paid player in Premier League history. The injury problem remained loyal to him in the new 2007/08 season when he broke his foot three times after a duel with Emmanuel Eboué and was out for two months. He and his team were then “second winner” three times in the 2007/08 season. First he lost the league cup final 2-1 to Tottenham Hotspur on February 24, 2008, later became runner-up in the Premier League and on May 21, 2008 he became a "tragic figure" in the Champions League final when he missed a penalty on penalties. who would otherwise have brought his team the victory - Manchester United won the penalty shootout 6-5 in the end.

John Terry (2013)

In the next two years Terry was denied success in the European elite class, but with the FA Cup victory under Guus Hiddink in 2009 and the win of the " double " in 2010 under Carlo Ancelotti , the axis Čech-Terry-Lampard-Drogba returned home to their old strength. Terry also scored some decisive goals during this time, for example in the Champions League home game against AS Roma and on November 8, 2009 against league rivals Manchester United to make it 1-0. With his 35th competitive goal, he had also broken the almost 50-year-old club record set by Peter Sillett , who had previously been Chelsea's most accurate "pure defender". On May 19, 2012, Chelsea won the final of the UEFA Champions League in Munich against Bayern Munich 5-4 on penalties. Terry was not allowed to play due to a suspension. In the semi-final second leg at FC Barcelona , he saw the red card for assault. In 2013, when Chelsea defeated Benfica Lisbon 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League final in Amsterdam , Terry was absent. He suffered from a ligament injury in his ankle. For the 2013/14 season, John Terry completed his 400th league game for Chelsea. His current contract was extended for another season by the club on May 18, 2016.

Aston Villa

In early July 2017, Terry signed a one-year deal with second division Aston Villa . Shortly after he was signed, he was named team captain for the 2017/18 season by coach Steve Bruce . Terry reached the play-off final for promotion to the Premier League with Aston Villa, but a 1-0 defeat by Fulham at Wembley Stadium narrowly missed it and he left the club afterwards. After remaining without a club in the following months - in September he turned down an offer from the Russian club Spartak Moscow - he officially ended his professional career in early October 2018.

English national team

In the English national team Terry came on June 3, 2003 in a friendly against Serbia and Montenegro for the first time. He made his competitive debut on September 6, 2003 in the European Championship qualifier against Macedonia , and for Euro 2004 in Portugal he was appointed to the English squad. After the 1: 2 opening defeat against defending champions France Terry completed the subsequent two group games against Switzerland and Croatia and was also in the quarter-finals against hosts Portugal . England lost on penalties despite a penalty from Terry .

From then on, he consolidated his place in the English national team, and his nomination for the 2006 World Cup in Germany was just a formality in view of his sporting soaring at Chelsea. On May 30, 2006, he scored his first international goal in a friendly against Hungary , and despite an injury in another preparatory game against Jamaica , he was back in time for the tournament even in the first game against Paraguay (1-0). In the game against Trinidad and Tobago (2-0) Terry fended off a header from Stern John for his defeated goalkeeper Paul Robinson on the line when the score was 0-0 . In the quarter-finals, his team failed again on the Portuguese selection on penalties. In an overall English team that remained below their expectations, Terry was one of the few top performers, which was documented by his election as the only English player in the all-star team of the tournament.

On August 10, 2006 Terry was appointed by England's new coach Steve McClaren to succeed David Beckham as captain of the national team. In his first game as the new captain, he scored his first goal for England in the friendly against Greece . However, qualifying for the Euro 2008 was disappointing and the English team missed a major finals tournament for the first time since 1994. Terry had taken on "full responsibility" for any failure. One of the few highlights during this time was his goal to make it 1-1 in the friendly against Brazil at the new Wembley Stadium. In February 2010 Terry was deposed as team captain by McClaren's successor Fabio Capello .

On March 20, 2011 Terry was reappointed captain, as his predecessor Rio Ferdinand could rarely perform this task due to injury. In February 2012, at the instigation of the association, he had to give up his captaincy because of allegations of racism against Anton Ferdinand . National coach Fabio Capello reacted to the unauthorized decision of the English association with his resignation. In mid-July 2012 Terry was acquitted of the racism allegations against Anton Ferdinand. Two weeks later, the English FA determined against Terry again on charges of racism against Ferdinand, but he was still eligible to play. Terry had until August 3, 2012 to comment.

On September 23, 2012 Terry ended his national team career.

Career as a coach

On October 11, 2018 - a few days after he had declared his playing career over - Terry became assistant coach of the newly signed head coach Dean Smith at the second division Aston Villa , for whom he was last active as a player until the end of the preseason.
