Patrick Anthony "Pat" Jennings OBE (born June 12, 1945 in Newry , County Down ) is a former Northern Irish football player . He is considered one of the best goalkeepers of all time.

Jennings has played over 1000 games for clubs and the national team in his career. He even scored a goal in the 1967 FA Community Shield final when a tee shot found its way into goal from Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney .

Club career

Jennings began his career in his hometown near Newry Town when he was 16 years old. In England they became aware of him and the third division Watford FC signed him in 1963. Since he did not miss a league game at the age of 18, he was now also noticed in higher leagues and Tottenham Hotspur paid a transfer fee of £ 27,000 at the end of the season.

Jennings stayed at White Hart Lane for 13 years and played 472 times for the Spurs. With the club he was successful in several competitions, so they won the FA Cup in 1967 , the League Cup in 1971 and 1973 and in 1972 they won the UEFA Cup . In 1973 the Football Writers 'Association voted him Footballer of the Year, and in 1976 the Professional Footballers' Association awarded him this title. Jennings also caused a curiosity in the 1967 Charity Shield against Manchester United when he overcame the opposing keeper Alex Stepney with a tee shot from 102 meters .

In August 1977 Jennings moved to arch-rivals Arsenal FC . There he completed 237 league games and led the club from 1978 to 1980 three times in a row to the final of the FA Cup. However, they only won the cup in 1979 when they defeated Manchester United 3-2.

In 1986 Jennings returned to Spurs and became a goalkeeping coach there after his career ended.

International

On April 15, 1964, the then 18-year-old Jennings was in the goal of the Northern Irish national football team for the first time when they beat Wales 3-2. Up until his last game on June 12, 1986, his 41st birthday, at the 1986 World Cup , a 3-0 draw against Brazil , Jennings played 119 international matches. There were 22 years and 58 days between his first and last game. No other male soccer player has played for his national team for so long. In his last game he was the oldest World Cup participant at the time ( surpassed by Roger Milla in 1994 ). From April 23, 1986 to June 16, 1990 he was the European record holder and was then replaced by Peter Shilton .

Private

Jenning's son, also called Pat , is also a soccer player. He plays for St Patrick's Athletic in the League of Ireland and won the League Cup with Derry City in 2006 .
