Kitchen song

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term kitchen song is commonly used to describe a group of songs of a folk song-like character or folk poetry texts . Most of the songs were written between the 19th century and around the end of the 1920s. The roots of some songs can be traced back to Goethe's time .

description

The works referred to as "kitchen songs" are thematically similar to bank singing and morality . While these song genres are clearly designed for public performance (e.g. at fairs or streets ), it is commonly assumed that kitchen songs were mostly sung by the staff of middle-class households , i.e. maids , mums , cooks , etc. , while doing housework - hence the name kitchen song . In fact, the songs often came from bourgeois salon music , for which they had been written by often second or third-rate poets and composers as art songs in the romanticizing folk tone. For this reason, and because the songs are considered sentimental and kitschy , the songs have received little attention from traditional folk song research, and the generic term hardly appears in scientific literature. The songs are usually kept in a sentimental to larmoyant tone and often, but not exclusively, deal with the fates of women and young girls, often with betrayed love, and thus the unfulfilled longings but also worries of. a. addressed by women in the 19th century. Since there are no scientific studies on these songs, the question of whether they represent a meaningfully delimitable " genre " must remain open for the time being.

Examples

reception

In the 1950s and 1960s, the publications of radio journalist Hartmann Goertz led to a nostalgic wave of popularity of the kitchen song. Our own collecting activities as well as radio mailings resulted in several LP and songbook publications, which, however, did not pursue any scientific claim, but rather were shaped by the personal preferences of the collectors and senders. The collections, which can be called randomly, contain ballads, soldiers' songs and sea shanties.

A comparable wave of reception started somewhat delayed in the GDR under the catchphrase "Mamsell's Songs". A songbook published by Horst Roatsch in 1965 was followed by two LP releases in the 1970s. In the flap and cover texts, the "involuntarily comical" of the songs was regularly emphasized.
