Otto Holzapfel (born February 5, 1941 in Beeskow / Spree) is a German folklorist and philologically oriented song researcher. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Freiburg i. Br. Retired.

Life

Growing up in Copenhagen (with Danish mother tongue; the mother Else Holzapfel, born Lundbye ), in the Salzkammergut (the father is the meteorologist Rupert Holzapfel , 1905-1960) and in Lower Franconia, High School in 1961 at the Leibniz school (Offenbach am Main) , studied Holzapfel Scandinavian Studies with Klaus von See , Senior German Studies and Folklore with Wolfgang Brückner in Frankfurt am Main. He received his doctorate in 1969 in Frankfurt / M., The habilitation took place in 1984 in Freiburg i. Br. (The German in Denmark. The image of the German in modern Danish literature. Neighborhood experiences, prejudices and their literary processing since 1848. Unprinted). He was a Danish lecturer in Frankfurt / M for three semesters. In 1970 he came to the German Folk Song Archive in Freiburg, which he headed as chief curator until 1996, succeeding Lutz Röhrich . Holzapfel was a senior scholarship holder in Odense / Denmark from 1977 to 1980 and repeatedly represented a chair in Zurich (European folk literature). He was series editor of the Studien zur Volksliedforschung (17 volumes; 1991–1996) and co-editor of the Jahrbuch für Volksliedforschung (article part; 1984–1998). In 1991 and 2006, Holzapfel had guest lectureships in Turkey (German as a foreign language). For many years he has had a collegial collaboration with the folk music archive of the Upper Bavaria district in Bruckmühl and its director Ernst Schusser.

Holzapfel analyzed the epic formula (its expression) and the variability (folk poetry) as helpful terms for researching the folk ballad . The texts of Es were two royal children and the castle in Austria offer prime examples of balladesque representational art in its interpretation. With the documentation and analysis by Graf and Nonne in 1988, a handbook of folk ballad research was created.

In addition to folk song research, family history has become a serious hobby. - His brother is the physicist Christian Holzapfel .
