Geneanet (spelling until early 2014 GeneaNet ) is a genealogy portal based in Paris , France . It was founded in 1996 by Jacques Le Marois , Jérôme Abela and Julien Cassaigne .

Initially the site was run by volunteers, in 2000 a limited company with a board of directors was founded in Paris in order to have more resources and to be able to expand the services further. The genealogy software GeneWeb is used . In 2008 a turnover of 1.215 million euros was achieved. The balance sheet total increased by 52.23% between 2007 and 2008. According to figures from Médiamétrie / NetRatings, Geneanet had the most visitors in its home country France in September 2012 with 869,000, followed by Genealogie.com with 689,000 and the French web database MyHeritage .fr with 260,000.

Use of the portal and setting up a user account are mostly free of charge. The web platform, which was originally financed exclusively by advertisements, had to create a paid “privilege” offer without advertisements as early as 2001 for reasons of competition. A paid premium subscription with the option of using service research tools and exclusive services has been available since the beginning of 2017.

As of January 2017, the project comprised one million members, 700,000 family trees and five billion referenced ancestors. In addition to French, the platform's language selection offers users German, English, Finnish, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish and Spanish (as of July 2018).
