Geneweb

GeneWeb is free genealogy software based on the client-server model . It was developed by Daniel de Rauglaudre at the French research institute INRIA .

GeneWeb is based on the Objective CAML programming language .

A daemon serves as the server . This daemon can run both locally on your own computer and on a central computer.

The client is any modern web browser .

This makes GeneWeb suitable both for domestic use for your own family tree and for processing and displaying large amounts of data. Therefore GeneWeb is also used as an engine for e.g. B. Geneanet (a genealogy database) (with more than 300,000,000 people) is used.

An example of direct web-based (read-only) access to a Geneweb database is the Roglo database, which stores more than 5,700,000 personal data.

properties

(all details refer to version 5.00):

  • Multilingualism: The user interface can be set to many languages of the Indo-European language family , but also Estonian , Finnish , Hebrew , Mandarin and Malay on the entry page . • There is access protection for accessing sensitive data or changing data with a "wizard", "friend" mechanism.
  • The calculation of blood relationship and degree of relationship is possible.
  • Ancestor and descendant lists can be created.
  • With the use of any number of nobility titles and associated locations per person (also applies to titles of rulers , academic degrees , honorary titles , etc.), a very powerful functionality is available that can also be used for prosopographical investigations. From this, chronological lists of rulers and much more can be generated very easily.
  • Display customizability: Most
Example of a self-modified form (person display): (28/20) represent the age of Wilhelm's parents at his birth. These values are not included in the original mask and database and are calculated dynamically.
Access forms are available on the server side as changeable HTML pages. Therefore, you can change or expand them according to your own wishes and thus display additional information as far as it can be determined from the existing data. Colors and backgrounds can also be customized.
  • There is a simple interface for (partial) export and import of GeneWeb databases for data backup .
  • In GeneWeb, databases can also be merged with other databases.
  • People can also be brought together automatically (or interactively in the event of a conflict), the ancestor tree is taken along.
  • A GEDCOM interface is available.
  • GeneWeb supports UTF-8 .

weaknesses

  • The Windows version is not capable of multitasking .
  • The handling is cumbersome in certain operations. Not all personal data can be entered when creating families, so that after the family has been created, each member of the family usually has to be expanded in a second step.
  • There are problems with displaying images on local servers. Here z. B. Firefox for security reasons the representation.
  • You can only search for first name, surname or place of birth, marriage and death. In the last three searches, only the last name is given. The specific persons must be determined manually by searching all persons with this surname.
