Franz Magnus Böhme
Franz Theodor Magnus Böhme (born March 11, 1827 in Willerstedt , † October 18, 1898 in Dresden ) was a German university teacher , composer , folk song researcher and collector.
Life
As the son of a farmer, after attending the seminar , Böhme became a primary school teacher in Thuringia and then studied at the Leipzig Conservatory with Moritz Hauptmann and Julius Rietz . From 1859 to 1878 he was a choirmaster and music teacher in Dresden , before teaching music history and counterpoint at the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main from 1878 to 1885 . From 1885 he taught again in Dresden and became a professor there.
Following the models of Ludwig Uhland and Ludwig Erk , he collected and published intensive folk songs and thus created an essential basis for German folk song research. Böhme died in Dresden in 1898 and was buried in the Trinitatisfriedhof . Significant parts of his estate (in particular his manuscripts on the history of dance and folk song, some of which are still unpublished to this day) came to the then Institute for Folk Music Research in Weimar during the GDR era and are now stored in the University Archive / Thuringian State Music Archive Weimar (signature: FMB); Another part of the estate, which includes around 16,000 collected songs and own compositions (shelf marks: Mus.1-W-26, Mus.1-W-27 / Mscr.Dresd.App.2345), is now in the Saxon State Library - Dresden State and University Library .
