Alexander Cyril Stepney (born September 18, 1942 in Mitcham ) is an English football goalkeeper .

Career

The goalkeeper had unsuccessful trial training at Fulham FC . Instead of being under contract with Fulham, he played for hobby club Tooting & Mitcham United. In 1963 he was signed as an amateur by Millwall FC . Two months after his first amateur contract, he got a professional contract due to good games. Stepney joined Chelsea in 1966 . Just three months later, he moved to Manchester United for a transfer fee of around € 81,000 . He made his debut at the city derby against Manchester City in 1966. In 1967 Stepney was a regular goalkeeper champion with United. One season later he won the championship cup with the Red Devils . He was the preeminent goalkeeper in the final. Stepney made top players like Eusébio desperate. Internationally, he made his debut in May 1968 against Sweden . He was also a member of the English selection at the European Football Championship in 1968 . The goalkeeper was also a substitute goalkeeper at the Football World Cup in Mexico in 1970 . In 1977 he won the FA Cup for the first time . After 546 games and two goals (two penalty goals, to this day most of a United goalkeeper) for the Reds from Manchester , he moved to Dallas Tornado in the USA in April 1978 . After his playing career, Stepney worked as a goalkeeper coach at Manchester City in 2000/2001.
