Geurt Gijssen (born August 15, 1934 ) is a Dutch chess referee .

He has been an international arbitrator since 1979 and was chairman of the FIDE rules committee . In 2013 he was made an honorary member of FIDE.

Life

Gijssen was born in Germany, where his father worked for a tobacco company, and experienced the Second World War there as a child . After the end of the war the family returned to the Netherlands. He has lived in Nijmegen since 1952 and worked there as a mathematics teacher at the grammar school until his retirement in 1983.

Appointments as a referee

Gijssen has directed many important tournaments since the 1980s, including several chess Olympiads ( Elista 1998, Istanbul 2000, Bled 2002, Turin 2006) and world chess championships :

Controversial and wrong decisions

In the World Cup fight between Kramnik and Topalow, he scored the 5th game on September 29, 2006 without a fight in favor of Topalow, after Kramnik had not appeared on the board an hour after the start of the game. Kramnik was protesting against a previous decision by the Appeals Committee to deny him access to a toilet reserved for him. Yasser Seirawan publicly criticized Gijssen for his decision . He was of the opinion that Gijssen should have announced a break because the contractually regulated playing conditions had changed to the detriment of Kramnik. Gijssen defended his behavior on the grounds that the appeal committee's decision was binding on him as an arbitrator.

The Tal Memorial in Moscow in 2006 Gijssen did not realize that a draw complaints from Magnus Carlsen due threefold repetition of position was unjustified. The position of the stones on the board was the same every time, but it was not the same player's turn every time. Nevertheless, Gijssen decided on a draw and the game forms were signed. It was only after Carlsen's opponent Alexander Morozevich had moved away that Gijssen realized his mistake. Carlsen was immediately ready to continue the game, but his opponent was beyond reach. The next day, Gijssen apologized to Morosewitsch for his mistake.

In September 2007, a case presented by Gijssen about how to decide in a blitz game if after mate is accidentally continued and the king of the mate-set is defeated in the next move caused discussion.

Works

In 1988 Gijssen and Wil G. Haggenburg wrote a handbook on the Swiss system ( Zwitsers systeem ) for the Koninklijke Nederlandse Schaakbond .

Since April 1998 he has been writing a monthly column in English on the Chesscafe.com website ( Arbiter's notebook ) on rule issues.

He collects chess literature and is a member of the Ken Whyld Association . At times he also wrote reviews for the chess magazine New In Chess .
