Chess History & Literature Society

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Chess History & Literature Society (CHLS) is an international association of chess researchers who want to collect all known chess literature in a central database . The association also promotes new editions of historical chess books.

founding

The society was founded as the Ken Whyld Association (KWA) on November 21, 2003 in Braunschweig on the initiative of Jurgen Stierter . Stierter is a chess collector and bibliographer from Amsterdam. The association is named after the British chess historian Ken Whyld . At the time of its founding, the KWA had more than 75 members. In October 2012 there were over 180, including the German grandmaster and chess collector Lothar Schmid . In 2012, Guy Van Habberney ( Belgium ) was chairman, Andy Ansel ( United States ) his deputy.

In August 2017, the organization's homepage had almost 200 members. The chairman is Robert van de Velde , his interim deputy is John Donaldson .

renaming

In June 2017 the association decided to change its name to Chess History & Literature Society, founded as the Ken Whyld Association (CHLS).

method

First of all, all accessible databases and catalogs - on paper and on data carriers - are to be brought together in the central database. This is time-consuming because the various databases are structured differently (data fields, sorting ...). At the same time, the members work their own collections into the database.
