Riyad Karim Mahrez ( Arabic رياض محرز, DMG Riyāḍ Maḥraz ; * February 21, 1991 in Sarcelles ) is an Algerian football player under contract with Manchester City .

Career

Riyad Mahrez was born in Sarcelles near Paris and played in his youth for his hometown club AAS Sarcelles . At the age of 18 he went to Quimper in Brittany and played for a year with FC Quimper in the amateur league before joining Le Havre AC . In the 2010/11 season he was a regular on the offensive in the second team and was successful with 13 goals. Therefore, he was accepted into the second division team the following year . He made his professional debut as a substitute on the first day of play. After that it was not used continuously until the end of the season. He failed to score, but played two classes lower in the reserve as successfully as last year.

From the 2012/13 season he finally played in the professional team and was used in 34 of the 38 season games. In his first real professional year, he scored four goals and set up six more before .

The following season he received an offer from Leicester City , the leaders of the 2nd English league ( Football League Championship ) at the beginning of the second half of the season . Mahrez moved to England for 400,000 euros and signed a contract until 2017. He was used in almost every game in the second half of the season and was involved in promotion to the Premier League as a league champion with three goals and five assists .

During the 2015/16 Premier League season , Mahrez had 33 appearances, in which he was directly involved in almost half of Leicester City's goals with 17 goals and 10 assists. On April 24, 2016, he was voted England's Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers' Association , beating his teammates Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur . Leicester surprisingly became English champions and qualified for the UEFA Champions League .

For the season 2018/19 Mahrez moved to Manchester City . He signed a contract with the reigning champion that ran until June 30, 2023.

National team

At the end of 2013, when Riyad Mahrez was still playing with Le Havre in the lower half of the French second division, he was brought up for the first time for the Algerian national football team . After his successful move to England, the team was invited to the group of 30 World Cup candidates to prepare for the 2014 World Cup. In the preparation game against Armenia on May 31, 2014, he made his debut in the national jersey. After another outing against Romania , he was accepted into the 23-man squad for the World Cup at the beginning of June.
