Théophile Abega Mbida nickname Doctor (born July 9, 1954 in Nkomo , † November 15, 2012 in Yaoundé ) was a Cameroonian football player and politician. He played for his country's national team.
Club career
Abega played for Canon Yaoundé where he won the 1978 African Cup of Champions Clubs, 1980 African Cup of Champions Clubs and 1979 African Cup Winners' Cup. He won four Cameroonian championships and the Cameroon Cup five times. He later played in France for Toulouse FC before ending his career in Switzerland with FC Vevey Sports 05 .
International career
Abega took part in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, where his national team delivered a respectable performance. Equal on points with the eventual world champion Italy, they were eliminated in the preliminary round. Abega completed all of the games for his team. In 1984 he led his national team to the title as captain of the African Cup of Nations . He scored in the final. He was nicknamed "The Doctor" because of his game intelligence.
After the clash with the Zambian goalkeeper Efford Chabala at the 1986 African Cup of Nations , he resigned.
politics
Abega became the district mayor of the sixth arrondissement of Yaoundé .
In 2006 he was named one of the 200 best African players of the last 50 years by the CAF .
death
Abega died of cardiac arrest at Yaoundé General Hospital , Yaoundé on November 15, 2012.
