The 1986 Africa Cup ( English : African Cup of Nations , French : Coupe d'Afrique des Nations ) was the 15th edition of the African continental football championship and took place from March 7th to 21st for the third time after 1959 and 1974 held in Egypt . Organized by the African continental football association Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), eight teams from Egypt , Algeria , Ivory Coast , Cameroon , Morocco , Mozambique , Zambia and Senegal took part.

As in previous years, there was also a qualification to reduce the field of participants from 34 applicants to eight finalists, with hosts Egypt and defending champions Cameroon automatically qualifying.

As usual, the game was played with two groups of four teams each. The two best teams in each group then played the tournament winner from the semi-finals in the knockout system . The final round matches were played at the Cairo International Stadium in Cairo and the Alexandria Stadium in Alexandria.

Host Egypt took advantage of the home advantage, won the tournament and became African champions for the third time after 1957 and 1959 .
