The Cairo International Stadium ( Arabic ستاد القاهرة الدولي) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Egyptian capital Cairo . With a capacity of 74,100, it is the second largest stadium in Egypt after the Borg El Arab Stadium in Alexandria . Its construction began in 1956, completed in 1960 and inaugurated by President Gamal Abdel Nasser on July 23 of the same year, the eighth anniversary of the 1952 Egyptian revolution . The architect of the stadium was the German Werner March , who built the Olympic Stadium in Berlin from 1934 to 1936 . Next to the stadium is the Cairo Stadium Indoor Halls Complex .
Currently it is mainly used for soccer games, but an athletics facility separates the spectators from the field. The facility was renovated as part of the preparations for the Africa Cup of 2006 . In 2019, several Africa Cup matches took place at the Cairo International Stadium, including the opening game, a semi-final and the final between victorious Algeria and Senegal . The stadium is about eight kilometers from Cairo International Airport and fourteen kilometers from downtown Cairo .
