qualification

In the final round, 24 teams competed, with 23 places being awarded through the individual U-19 and U-20 continental championships. Host Egypt was already qualified for the finals from the start.

The European association UEFA had six starting places available, these were awarded at the U-19 European Championship 2008 in the Czech Republic . The teams that finished in the top three places in their respective group after the group stage were qualified for the final round.

The Asian Football Association AFC had four starting places. The U-19 Asian Cup 2008 , which was hosted by Saudi Arabia , served as the qualifying tournament . The four semi-finalists Australia, South Korea, Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates represented the Asian continent in Egypt.

Four teams from CONCACAF , the football association of North America and the Caribbean, qualified at the CONCACAF U-20 championship in March 2009 in Trinidad and Tobago . The semi-finalists Costa Rica, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago and the USA had qualified for the World Cup.

Four other teams qualified from the African football association CAF in addition to the host Egypt that had already been set. The U-20 African Cup of Nations 2009 in Rwanda served as a qualifying tournament , in which Ghana was able to secure the title. The teams from Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa also qualified .

The South American association CONMEBOL had four starting positions at this world championship; these were awarded to Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela at the U-20 South American Football Championship 2009 in Venezuela . The defending champion Argentina surprisingly failed without a single win.

The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) determined its participants at the U-20 Oceania Football Championship in Tahiti in December 2008 , where the hosts were able to secure the victory and thus the qualification.
