The 17th U-20 World Cup 2009 (until 2005 Junior World Cup ) was held in Egypt from September 24 to October 16, 2009 . The country hosted the tournament for the first time. 24 teams competed against each other first in group games and then in qualifying games. The defending champion was the team from Argentina , which surprisingly could not qualify for the tournament.
In the final, Ghana beat four-time world champions Brazil on penalties . This is the first time an African country has won the junior world championship. Third place went to Hungary , who also beat Costa Rica on penalties . The German team was eliminated in the quarterfinals against the eventual finalists Brazil. Austria and Switzerland could not qualify for the World Cup finals.

The World Cup games took place in seven stadiums in five cities in Egypt.

qualification
In the final round, 24 teams competed, with 23 places being awarded through the individual U-19 and U-20 continental championships. Host Egypt was already qualified for the finals from the start.
The European association UEFA had six starting places available, these were awarded at the U-19 European Championship 2008 in the Czech Republic . The teams that finished in the top three places in their respective group after the group stage were qualified for the final round.
The Asian Football Association AFC had four starting places. The U-19 Asian Cup 2008 , which was hosted by Saudi Arabia , served as the qualifying tournament . The four semi-finalists Australia, South Korea, Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates represented the Asian continent in Egypt.
Four teams from CONCACAF , the football association of North America and the Caribbean, qualified at the CONCACAF U-20 championship in March 2009 in Trinidad and Tobago . The semi-finalists Costa Rica, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago and the USA had qualified for the World Cup.
Four other teams qualified from the African football association CAF in addition to the host Egypt that had already been set. The U-20 African Cup of Nations 2009 in Rwanda served as a qualifying tournament , in which Ghana was able to secure the title. The teams from Cameroon, Nigeria and South Africa also qualified .
The South American association CONMEBOL had four starting positions at this world championship; these were awarded to Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela at the U-20 South American Football Championship 2009 in Venezuela . The defending champion Argentina surprisingly failed without a single win.
The Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) determined its participants at the U-20 Oceania Football Championship in Tahiti in December 2008 , where the hosts were able to secure the victory and thus the qualification.

The draw for the six final groups of the 2009 Junior World Cup took place on April 5, 2009 in the temples of the city of Luxor . This resulted in the following groups: The preliminary round was held in six groups with four teams each. The six group winners and runners-up as well as the four best thirds in the group qualified for the round of 16.
