Krisztián Németh (born January 5, 1989 in Győr ) is a Hungarian football player . Since August 2018 he has been under contract with Sporting Kansas City in the United States .

In his native Hungary he was considered the greatest offensive talent since Lajos Détári .

Club career

Career start in Hungary

Nemeth began his career in the youth of his home club Győri ETO FC . Already in Győr he had the reputation of being a huge talent, whereupon MTK Budapest provided him with his first professional contract in 2004 at the age of only 15.

In Budapest he was able to gain a foothold in the professional team right away, was used in his first season in twelve games of the season in which he scored two goals. He showed consistently strong performances, which earned him the honor of “Hungary's Best Young Professional” at the end of the season. In the following season he then fought for a regular place and became the absolute star of the team. He scored twelve goals in 25 appearances this season, keeping his team in the fight for the title for a long time. At the end of the season he was runner-up behind VSC Debrecen with MTK . At the same time, he had caused a sensation internationally with his outstanding performances in the Hungarian U-17 and U-19 national teams, which made a stay in Budapest extremely unlikely. Offers from half of Europe followed.

Change to Liverpool

In May 2007, he and his highly talented teammate András Simon signed for Liverpool FC in England. For Nemeth alone, Liverpool paid a transfer fee of around € 850,000 to Budapest. As soon as he arrived in England, he was received with great praise and, due to his similar career path, compared to the Hungarian striker legend Ferenc Puskás , who also made his professional debut at 16. Due to a knee injury, however, it was not until October 27, 2007 that he made his debut for a Liverpool team. He was used in the 0-0 U-18 team against West Bromwich Albion . In November 2007, he made his debut for the Liverpool reserve team in a 3-0 win against Manchester City . Nemeth scored two of three Liverpool goals, which was the start of an incredible series. In the following game against local rivals Everton he scored two goals again and in the next game against Middlesbrough the winning goal to make it 1-0. As a result, he had shot Liverpool almost single-handedly to the top of the Reserve League North with five goals in three games. It was followed by three more goals in the course of the season, including the winning goal in the decisive game against the reserves of the Blackburn Rovers , whereby one the title in the Reserve League North and the associated participation in the play-off games for the Reserve League National Could fix title. Nemeth became the league's top scorer with a total of eight goals in eleven games. Between the play-off games, he took part with the reserve in the traditional "Dallas Cup" in the United States. In the final against the U-23 of the Mexican club UANL Tigres , he scored two goals for a 3-0 victory. As a result, he reached the final of the Reserve League National with the club, in which they met the reserve of Aston Villa . Liverpool won 3-0, Nemeth scored the goal to make it 1-0. At the end of the season he was then voted Liverpool's “Reserve League Player of the Season”.

In preparation for the 2008/09 season, he was then accepted for the first time in the professional squad of Liverpool. Among other things, he was used in a row in the friendlies against Villarreal FC and Glasgow Rangers . Due to his top season in the reserve team, he had once again attracted the interest of various media, which now compared him to Robbie Fowler , who was also top scorer in the Liverpool reserve team in 1992/93 and then delivered a debut season with twelve goals this season.

At the same time, the pressure on Nemeth to get professional deployments increased. Among other things, the Hungarian national team coach Erwin Koeman spoke up , who suggested Nemeth move to a championship club on loan in order to gain match practice. Without this, he would not be called up for the national team. Several clubs were also interested in loaning the player. A move to Leeds United was reported to be almost certain, but Liverpool coach Rafael Benítez vetoed his plans for Nemeth to join the professional team.

As a result, he received the number 29 for the professional squad for the 2008/09 season, which he should never wear in a professional game due to an "epidemic season". Right at the beginning of the season he suffered an injury that forced him to take a month-long break. In the winter he was then awarded for a month in the championship at Blackpool FC in order to reconnect . He then made his debut in the game against Queens Park Rangers , in which he was substituted on in the 70th minute. A minute later he injured himself again, but played the game to the end. Another injury-related retirement until the end of the season was inevitable. So it was a game for Blackpool. In April 2009 he ran again for the Liverpool Reserve to score the decisive goal for the 1-0 victory in the final of the Senior Cup.

In preparation for the 2009/10 season, he was then once again included in the professional squad of Liverpool and was also used in the friendly matches against FC St. Gallen , Rapid Vienna and the Singapore national team.

On loan to AEK

On August 25, 2009, Liverpool announced that they would loan Nemeth to Greece at the AEK Athens for one year . In his debut for AEK he delivered an outstanding performance. As a substitute in the 29th minute, he prepared the only goal by Ismael Blanco and kept the defense of the opposing team busy throughout the game. He was then voted player of the round in Greece. On September 20, he scored his first goal for AEK in a 1-1 draw against PAS Giannina . Three days later he scored the only goal in a bitter 2-1 home defeat in the game against arch-rivals Olympiacos . As a result, he was posted for the U-20 World Cup, which he failed until October 2009 for AEK. In the second half of the season he was then stopped by an injury, which he only came to a total of twelve championship games with 3 goals for AEK.

Switch to Olympiakos

After the loan contract expired, AEK tried to keep the player under contract, but this failed due to the Athens' tight financial situation. As a result, the reigning champions Panathinaikos Athens expressed great interest in signing the player, but could not come to an agreement with the Liverpoolers. In August 2010 he surprisingly moved to the Greek record champions Olympiacos for the equivalent of around 1.2 million euros .

National team

He first attracted attention as a member of the Hungarian U-16 national team, with which he qualified for the U-17 European Championship in 2006 in Luxembourg . With a hat trick in the decisive game against Sweden, he was instrumental in the qualification. Although they were eliminated in the preliminary round after two unfortunate defeats against eventual winners Russia and Spain and a win against host country Luxembourg, Nemeth in particular made a lasting impression. In his 3 missions he scored two goals. In the same year he was nominated for the “UEFA U-18 Team Europe”. In 2007 he was in the European squad for the UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup .

In 2008, he and Hungary qualified for the U-19 European Championship in the Czech Republic . In the preliminary round of the tournament they eliminated the record world champions Spain, among others, and advanced to the semi-finals, where they were eliminated by a 0-1 defeat against Italy. Nemeth was used in all four games and was able to score the winning goal against Bulgaria in the preliminary round. That same year he scored seven goals in a mini U-19 tournament in Cyprus.

In 2009 his greatest success to date followed on an international level. With the U-20 national team , he took part in the 2009 Junior World Cup in Egypt . Due to the team's earlier successes, which had changed only marginally since the U-17, Hungary was treated as a "secret favorite", which the team knew to confirm. With two wins and one defeat they survived the group stage as leaders and then eliminated the Czech Republic and Italy. Only in the semi-finals did they lose 3-2 against eventual world champions Ghana. The game for third place was won on penalties against Costa Rica. Due to an ankle injury, Nemeth had to sit out in the opening game against Honduras, which Hungary lost. In the third game of the tournament against South Africa, the injury was acute again for a short time, which means that he was also absent from this game. In all other games he was a regular player and scored a brace in extra time against Italy, which paved the way for Hungary to the semi-finals. In the game for third place against Costa Rica, he took the penalty in minute 91, which only allowed extra time. In the penalty shootout, he then converted one of the two Hungarian penalties that fixed 3rd place in the tournament.

From 2007 to 2010 he was also a member of the U-21 national team of Hungary, for which he scored 15 goals in 12 appearances.

In May 2008 he was called up for the first time by the newly appointed national coach Erwin Koeman for the friendly game against Croatia in the Hungarian national soccer team . The game ended with a 1-1 draw. Nemeth sat on the bench for the entire 90 minutes of play.

With 41 goals in 40 youth international matches (as of October 2009), he is considered one of the most successful goal scorers worldwide at the junior level .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Hungarian squad. In the first tournament game against neighboring Austria, he was still on the starting line-up. In the remaining three games up to the elimination in the round of 16, he only came on as a substitute in the last group game against Portugal.
