The 24th U17 European Football Championship took place from May 3rd to 14th, 2006 in Luxembourg . For Luxembourg, hosting the tournament meant the only participation so far. It was the second UEFA tournament in Luxembourg after the 1996 European Under-18 Football Championship, which was organized with France . Russia won the final over the Czech Republic. Defending champion Turkey and final opponent Netherlands could not qualify, Germany finished fourth. Toni Kroos was named a golden player by UEFA .

The eight qualified teams were divided into two groups of four teams each. Within the groups, each team played each other once. The group winners and runners-up reached the semi-finals. The semi-final winners reached the final, the losers played for third place.
