youth

Toni Kroos grew up in the Schönwalde district in Greifswald in Western Pomerania . He learned to play football at Greifswalder SC under his father Roland , who worked as a youth coach for the club, used to play football there himself and later became a coach in the youth division of Hansa Rostock . His mother Birgit Kämmer was GDR badminton champion ten times between 1981 and 1988 ( two individual and eight team titles ) with the BSG unit Greifswald . Toni's younger brother Felix Kroos is also a professional footballer; He was a junior national player and has been playing for 1. FC Union Berlin since January 2016 .

Kroos attended the sports remedial class of the former Ostseegymnasium in the Rostock district of Evershagen , which he left with the secondary school leaving certificate . In 2002 the family moved to Rostock when the father got a job as a youth coach at Hansa Rostock. Toni and Felix Kroos then joined the Rostock offspring. Toni stood out in the youth of Hansa Rostock with outstanding performances, which made him jump over some youth teams. In 2004 FC Bayern Munich expressed interest; Toni Kroos stayed in Rostock for the time being and won the runner-up championship with the B-Youth in 2004/05 .

FC Bayern Munich

In the summer of 2006, Kroos moved to Bayern Munich and received an amateur contract that ran until 2011. He coined as a playmaker the game's Under-19 team and led them in the season 2006/07 into the final of the German A-Junior Championship , with 1: 2 aet. At Bayer 04 Leverkusen was lost. In the second half of the 2006/07 season he trained with the pros and also played a few friendly matches with the first team. Their coach Ottmar Hitzfeld took over Kroos in the 2007/08 season in the professional squad. From then on he trained with the first team, but mostly played in the second team . In the Bundesliga he was in the squad for the first time on September 26, 2007 (7th matchday) in a 5-0 win at home against Energie Cottbus , where he came on in the 72nd minute for Zé Roberto and the templates for the last two goals by Miroslav Klose . At 17 years and 265 days, Kroos was the youngest player to have played in the Bundesliga for Bayern. This record was beaten by David Alaba in 2010 .

On October 4, 2007, Kroos made his European debut in the first round of the UEFA Cup at Bayern Munich's away game at Belenenses Lisbon when he came on for Bastian Schweinsteiger in the 81st minute . In total, he came twelve times in his first year in the league and six times in the European Cup, mostly as a substitute. He also played twice in the DFB Cup and was in the squad for the cup final, but was not substituted on. With Bayern, Kroos won the championship and cup double this season . After reaching the age of 18, on January 11, 2008, his contract was converted into a professional contract with a term until June 30, 2012.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen

At the beginning of the 2008/09 season , Kroos was under the new coach Jürgen Klinsmann several times in the starting lineup, but could not prevail in the first half of the season. In order to gain match practice, he was loaned out to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on January 31, 2009 for a year and a half . There he was initially unable to earn a regular place in the second half of the season after he was late due to a ligament injury. He was only in the starting line-up in the last four games of the season. He had previously scored his first Bundesliga goal on April 18, 2009 in the game at VfL Wolfsburg . In the new 2009/10 season he was in the regular line-up from the start after Renato Augusto's injury . During the first half of the season he became a top performer, so that Karl-Heinz Rummenigge announced at the annual general meeting of FC Bayern Munich on November 27, 2009 that Kroos would return to Bayern for the new season. On December 19, 2009, Kroos scored two goals in a Bundesliga game for the first time in a 3-2 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach by scoring 1-0 and 3-2 and thus had a share in his team's autumn championship. In December 2009, Kroos was voted by readers of Kicker sports magazine for player of the month selected. The kicker also named him Man of the Day for the third time in a row on the 19th match day of the 2009/10 season , something that had never happened before. In the second half of the season Kroos was able to confirm his good performance and moved into the field of vision of national coach Joachim Löw . He played all of the season's games except for a yellow card suspension and with nine goals was the third-best goalscorer for the Leverkusen team, who finished fourth.

Return to FC Bayern Munich

Although Leverkusen would have liked to have tied him long-term, Kroos returned to Bayern Munich for the 2010/11 season . Benefiting from the injuries of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribéry, he quickly moved up to the starting line-up and stayed there for most of the first half of the season. Health problems led to a forced break after the winter break; the second half of the season was a bit more changeable. It was the same with his first Champions League appearances. In the six games before the winter break, he played from the start, in the round of 16 he only made a short appearance before Munich were eliminated. Before the end of the season, Kroos' contract term was prematurely extended by three years to June 30, 2015. The following year was more successful for him as well as for the club. In all three season competitions, the team came in second, and Kroos played all but three Bundesliga games and one Champions League game.

On April 2, 2013 Kroos suffered a double torn muscle in the quarter-final of the Champions League against Juventus Turin and was thus out for the rest of the season. Nevertheless, he had a share in the success of FC Bayern Munich in the 2012/13 season, which ended with the triple .

On August 30, 2013, he won the European Supercup with Bayern against Chelsea . In the 2013/14 season he won the double again with Bayern.

After Kroos had not been able to agree on an extension of his contract, which ran until 2015, with FC Bayern, he moved to Real Madrid in the Spanish Primera División for the 2014/15 season and signed a six-year contract there. According to consistent media reports, the transfer fee was around 30 million euros , with his annual gross earnings being 10.9 million euros. He played his first competitive game for Real Madrid on August 12, 2014 in Cardiff in the UEFA Super Cup game , which he and his team won 2-0 against Sevilla FC . On the first day he made his debut for Real Madrid in La Liga at 2: 0 home win against FC Cordoba , to which he, which came of it and Karim Benzema recovered corner to 1: 0 helped. He scored his first league goal on matchday 11 in a 5-1 home win against Rayo Vallecano . Kroos was able to secure a regular place in the midfield straight away at Real, trained by Carlo Ancelotti . In December he won the Club World Cup in Morocco with his new club by beating San Lorenzo from Argentina 2-0 . The final took place at the Stade de Marrakech , where he had won the Club World Cup with FC Bayern a year earlier. There were no other titles in his first season at Real. In the league he finished second behind FC Barcelona , in the Champions League Real failed as defending champions in the semi-finals at Juventus Turin and in the national cup in the round of 16 at city rivals Atlético Madrid . After the end of the season, Ancelotti was replaced by Rafael Benítez . Kroos could look back on a good first season at Real, in which he had been in the starting line-up in almost all games.

In the 2015/16 season , Kroos and Real had to give FC Barcelona precedence again in the league and Real was even disqualified in the national cup because a yellow-banned player was used in the game against third division club FC Cádiz . Coach Benítez was replaced by Zinédine Zidane in the winter . The season was more successful internationally. In the Champions League , Real marched into the quarter-finals without any problems, losing the first leg at VfL Wolfsburg 2-0, but still got through with a 3-0 second leg and then knocked out Manchester City in the semifinals . Neighbor Atlético Madrid was waiting for the final. The game was won on penalties, but Kroos was no longer on the pitch at the time, but was substituted for Isco in the 72nd minute for tactical reasons . This season, Kroos was also mostly in the starting line-up, but was unable to build on his previous season's performance and was sometimes criticized.

On October 12, 2016, he extended his contract term with Real ahead of schedule until 2022. In the 2016/17 season , Real won the Spanish championship again after five years. Kroos contributed with three goals in 29 games but was injured for several weeks in the fall. Real also won the title with Kroos at the Club World Cup in Japan. In the national cup , he was eliminated with the team in the quarter-finals against Celta Vigo . In the Champions League , he met his former club Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, while Real advanced in extra time. Atlético Madrid were eliminated in the semifinals and Kroos was also in the final in Cardiff against Juventus Turin. The Champions League title was defended 4-1.

The 2017/18 season was disappointing in the league for Kroos and his club. At the end of the season, they finished third, 17 points behind champions Barcelona. Toni Kroos played 27 games and five goals and was absent several times due to injuries. In the national cup , Real was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the suburban club CD Leganés . In that competition, Kroos was spared in each of the six games, but not so in the national and international Supercup and the Club World Cup, which were all won. Kroos was also almost always there in the Champions League. In the quarter-finals against Juventus Turin and in the semi-finals against Bayern Munich, Real Madrid came close and in the final in Kiev, which was won 3-1 against Liverpool FC , he defended the title with Real Madrid for the second time in a row. Kroos is the only German to have won the Champions League four times. He is also the first German to win the Champions League title as a player with two different clubs.

In April 2020, Kroos complained about the wage waiver decided by Real in the wake of the Corona crisis . For him it is "like a donation to nowhere or to the club, although it is not necessary here (at Real Madrid)." With his annual salary of € 21,000,000, Kroos has to forego € 175,000 per month for the club. After public criticism, Kroos declared himself in Spanish via Twitter and now emphasizes: "If we can help the staff and in areas of the club, I see it as logical to give up part of our salary." His contract with Real runs until 2023.

U national teams

Kroos played for three of the seven youth national teams of the DFB and came to a total of 49 missions. For the first time he was used in the U-17 selection , which he led to third place in the tournament as captain at the U-17 World Cup in South Korea in 2007 . Then Kroos was voted best player of the tournament with 26 percent of the vote, ahead of Nigerian Macauley Chrisantus (25 percent). He also scored five goals and made four assists, making him the third best scorer and the tournament's best scorer .

In August 2008, the then U-21 coach Dieter Eilts nominated him for the first time for the U-21 selection at the age of 18 . For this he made his debut on September 5, 2008, when he was in the game against Northern Ireland in the starting lineup and scored a goal. On March 27, 2009 Kroos was used for the first time in the U-19 national team and scored three goals. At the same time, Kroos had been transferred back to the younger year by U-21 national coach Horst Hrubesch in order to gain match practice after an ankle injury. However , Kroos canceled his participation in the U-20 World Cup in Egypt in September 2009 because Bayer Leverkusen did not want to release him during the season.

On January 21, 2010, on the occasion of a performance test with a view to the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa, national coach Joachim Loew appointed Kroos to the senior national team for the first time . He then made his international A debut on March 3 of the same year when he was substituted on in the 67th minute of the 0-1 defeat in the friendly against Argentina in the 67th minute for Thomas Müller  - also debutant that evening. He completed three more missions in preparation for the World Cup, two of them from the start. On May 6, Kroos was finally appointed as the youngest player in the World Cup squad . In the course of the tournament he came to a total of four missions, where he was substituted in in the second half. In the 1-0 defeat in the semifinals against Spain , Kroos had the only clear scoring chance on the German side shortly after his substitution, when he got a shot in the penalty area, but was denied by Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas .

Even after the World Cup, he was still called up by national coach Löw. From 2010 to 2011 he was used in eight of the ten European Championship qualifiers, all of which were won, six of which he was in the starting line-up. Kroos scored his first international A goal in a friendly against Poland on September 6, 2011, when he converted a penalty in the 68th minute to equalize 1-1. After that he was part of the first team in preparation for the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine and was nominated for the German European Championship squad . In the tournament, however, he fell out of the regular line-up and only made three short appearances in the group round, in the quarter-finals he was not used at all. In the semifinals against Italy , he was then surprisingly set up by coach Löw to take tactical action against the opposing midfield. But the concept didn't work, Italy had already scored two goals at half time and the game ended in a 2-1 defeat.

Following the European Championship, Kroos continued to be part of the national team's extended regular squad. Between 2012 and 2013 he played in seven of the ten World Cup qualifying matches, scoring three goals and preparing three goals. On June 2, 2014 he was appointed to the squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil by national coach Löw . In a different position as a playmaker , he was in the starting line-up in all games. Already after the 4-0 win in the first round match against Portugal he was christened Garçon (German: "waiter") by the Brazilian media , as he distributed almost all passes precisely from midfield and prepared two goals. In the 7-1 victory in the semi-final against hosts Brazil , he was voted Man of the Match after he had scored two goals himself and was involved in two more goals. On July 13, 2014, Kroos won the world title with the national team after a 1-0 final victory over Argentina . Due to his performance during the tournament, he was included in the Top 11 index of the 2014 World Cup. Kroos is the first and only soccer world champion born in the GDR .

At the European Championships in France in 2016 , he was part of the German squad . He played all tournament games over the entire season and prepared the first tournament goal for the Germans in the first game against Ukraine . In the quarter-final against Italy, he was the first German shooter on penalties. The team was eliminated in the semifinals against France . After the tournament he was chosen as one of three German players in the "Team of the Tournament".

At the 2018 World Cup , Kroos played the full distance in all three group matches. In the second group game against Sweden it was 1: 1 for a long time before Toni Kroos circled a free kick into the right cross in the fifth minute of stoppage time and brought Germany to victory . After the 1-0 defeat in the opening match against Mexico , they needed a win to make it into the round of 16 on their own. In the following game against South Korea (0: 2), however, they did not manage to achieve the necessary victory and advance to the second round. Thus, the German national team was eliminated for the first time at a World Cup in the preliminary round.

After the World Cup, Kroos stood out with a statement about the resignation of Mesut Özil from the national team: Özil “deserved a better exit as a footballer”. “But the way he resigned was not right. The portion that is well and correctly addressed in his declaration is unfortunately overshadowed by the much higher proportion of nonsense. ”He rejected Özil's accusation of racism : He thinks that Özil knows that there is no racism in the national team. The opposite is the case: “We always stand up for diversity and integration out of conviction . Mesut was a good example of this, as were many of our fellow players. ”The impact of the Mesut Özils and İlkay Gündoğan's affair about the meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan shortly before the Turkish parliamentary elections, during which a photo was taken with the President He saw the performance of the national team at the World Cup as low: From his point of view "it would be embarrassing as a team to hide in this - mainly public - debate and to cite this as a reason for the performance."
