DFL League Cup 2007
The DFL League Cup 2007 (officially premiered League Cup 2007 ) was the twelfth and so far last edition of the competition and began on July 21, 2007 with the preliminary round matches in Düsseldorf. The final was held in Leipzig on July 28th. Participants were VfB Stuttgart , FC Schalke 04 , Werder Bremen and FC Bayern Munich, the first four teams in the final table of the previous Bundesliga season, 1. FC Nürnberg as cup winners and for the first time the champions of the 2nd Bundesliga this year the Karlsruher SC . The top scorer was Franck Ribéry of Bayern Munich with 3 goals.
Tournament course
Before the tournament, all teams emphasized how unimportant the title was and that the games were only viewed as preparation for the league. Schalke 04 had made an improvement after the narrow win against Karlsruhe, which they achieved with the win against Nuremberg. The DFB Cup winner showed weaknesses in the defense, which had formed the core of the team in the previous season. Bayern Munich clearly won against Werder Bremen in the preliminary round and defeated champions Stuttgart in the semifinals. So all three champions were eliminated in the first game. The final was contested by two teams that had to compete in the preliminary round. Both teams played poorly in the final, with Bayern winning 1-0.
