Marcelo José Bordon (born January 7, 1976 in Ribeirão Preto ) is a former Brazilian football player . The central defender played in Germany from 1999 to 2010 for VfB Stuttgart and FC Schalke 04 .

Club career

Beginnings in Brazil

Bordon's career began with Botafogo FC de Ribeirão Preto , for whose youth teams he played from 1983 to 1993. From 1994 to 1995 he played for the second team of São Paulo FC , until June 1999 for the senior team.

VfB Stuttgart

He became known in Germany when he moved to VfB Stuttgart in the 1999/2000 season . Bordon managed the transition from emotional Brazilian football to tactically oriented football rather slowly. Coach Ralf Rangnick saw this mainly due to Bordon's rather mediocre English . Still, Bordon quickly became an important player. In the next few years he became head of defense of a partly still young Stuttgart team and was considered one of the best central defenders in the league. He also learned German quickly . He made his first Champions League game during the 2003/04 season on September 16, 2003 in a 2-1 defeat by Glasgow Rangers . In addition to his defensive strengths, Bordon was also considered a dangerous central defender. On March 28, 2004, the 26th matchday of the 2003/04 Bundesliga season , he managed a hat trick in the game against Werder Bremen . The strong appearances in the Stuttgart jersey let Bordon move into the field of vision of the national team, but also other clubs. Bordon played a total of 157 competitive games for VfB Stuttgart and scored 12 goals.

FC Schalke 04

Bordon moved to Bundesliga rivals FC Schalke 04 for the 2004/05 season . As before in Stuttgart, he was also a regular at Schalke and a top performer. In his first season he made 27 league games and scored his first two competitive goals for Schalke on the last matchday against SC Freiburg . In the 2004/05 DFB Cup they made it to the final. In the 2005/06 season , Bordon won the DFL League Cup in a game against his former club VfB Stuttgart . In the league, FC Schalke fell short of expectations and only qualified for the UEFA Cup . In the Champions League you were eliminated as a third party, but were allowed to enter the UEFA Cup. There they were only eliminated in the semifinals against the later title holder FC Sevilla .

Since the 2006/07 season Bordon was captain of the Schalke team and thus also chairman of the team council. With the exception of the league results, the season was anything but good for Schalke. In the Europa League they were eliminated in the play-off game against AS Nancy , in the DFB Cup in the second round against 1. FC Köln . In the league cup too, they only survived the first round. In the league, however, they narrowly missed the championship, Bordon's former club VfB Stuttgart overtook Schalke shortly before the end of the season. Schalke still qualified for the Champions League. The 2007/08 season was just as strong in the league as the previous season. With third place you qualified for the play-off games of the Champions League; Bordon had contributed with five goals. In the league cup they made it to the final, in the Champions League they were only eliminated in the quarter-finals against FC Barcelona .

The 2008/09 season began with the elimination in the play-off games for the Champions League against Atlético Madrid . The quarter-finals of the DFB Cup came to an end, and the UEFA Cup also ended the international competition after the group stage. In the league they did not manage to qualify again for an international competition. The consequences: Coach Fred Rutten was dismissed, Bordon gave up his position as captain on March 17, 2009 to his deputy Mladen Krstajić . Several injuries at the end of the season were decisive for this. Among other things, he missed eight league games because of a thigh strain. In the 2009/10 season they lost the championship race against FC Bayern Munich . For the first time Bordon was goalless in one season.

At the beginning of July 2010, Bordon dissolved his contract with FC Schalke 04, which originally ran until 2011. He had played 168 Bundesliga appearances, 36 European, 18 DFB Cup and six DFL league cup games for the Royal Blues. He scored 18 goals and prepared nine more hits. He received a total of 40 yellow cards and was only sent off the field once.

Al-Rayyan SC

In the 2010/11 season Bordon played in Qatar for Al-Rayyan SC and scored one goal in eleven league games. He then ended his active career.
