Hamit Altıntop [ haˈmit altɯntɔp ] (born December 8, 1982 in Gelsenkirchen ) is a former German-Turkish soccer player . His twin brother Halil was also a professional footballer and Turkish national player.
Altıntop has been a board member of the Turkish Football Association since June 1, 2019 .
Career
youth
The two brothers started playing club football at the DJK Schwarz-Weiß Gelsenkirchen-Süd . After a year they both moved to TuS Rotthausen in the neighboring district in the south of Gelsenkirchen. In the four years with the Rotthausener youngsters, sifters of the then second division club SG Wattenscheid 09 , whose club area is located immediately south of the Gelsenkirchen city limits, noticed both.
Professional area
At the age of 18 Hamit and Halil joined the first team of SG Wattenscheid, which has since been relegated to the third-class Regionalliga Nord . Hamit earned himself a regular place and appeared for the club 75 times within three years. His achievements also aroused the interest of clubs from the Bundesliga .
In the end, the club made the race for Hamit from its hometown, FC Schalke 04 . In his first game for Schalke on August 2, 2003 (1st matchday) in the home game against Borussia Dortmund (final score 2: 2) he contributed the goals to 1: 0 and 2: 0. His brother Halil joined the Schalke team in the summer of 2006.
For the 2007/08 season Altıntop moved to Bayern Munich , where he signed a three-year contract. At Bayern, he should replace Hasan Salihamidžić, who had moved to Juventus Turin , in the right midfield . Despite the stiff competition in his position, Altıntop made regular use of his first season. In 2008 and 2010 he won the double of the German championship and the DFB Cup with FC Bayern . In the final of the Champions League on May 22, 2010, he replaced the suspended Franck Ribéry , but could not prevent the 2-0 defeat against Inter Milan . The club extended his contract by one year until June 2011.
At the end of the 2010/11 season he left the club on a free transfer.
Real Madrid signed Altıntop from the 2011/12 season. He was given a four-year contract until June 30, 2015. After a long injury break, during which media reports said he waived his salary, he played his first competitive game on September 27, 2011 in a 3-0 win over Ajax Amsterdam in the UEFA Champions League for the Madrilenians. During the season Altıntop never got beyond the status of a supplementary player and completed only 155 minutes of use in the league.
In July 2012, Galatasaray signed Istanbul Altıntop. In his first season he won the Turkish championship with the team . After a total of 89 competitive games in four and a half years, he was hardly used at Galatasaray at the end, so that at the beginning of January his contract, which was still running until the end of the season, was terminated by mutual agreement and he left the club. He played his last game for Galatasaray on December 28, 2016 in a 3-2 defeat in the group stage of the Turkish Cup against third division club Tuzlaspor , a club from Istanbul.
At the end of January 2017, Altıntop was signed by the relegation-threatened Bundesliga club SV Darmstadt 98 and received a contract there until the end of the season. In mid-July 2017, Altıntop extended his contract term to 2018. At the beginning of January 2018, he left the club for private reasons and moved to Turkey with his family.
National team
He made his debut for the Turkish national team on February 18, 2004 in Adana against Denmark. Two free kicks in the European Championship qualifier against Norway on March 28, 2007 not only led to his first international goals , but also to the final 2-2. With the Turkish national soccer team, he reached the semi-finals of the European Championship in 2008 . After the tournament, he was elected to the UEFA All-Star Team.
In the 3-0 victory in the qualifier for the Euro 2012 against Kazakhstan on September 3, 2010 Altıntop scored the 2-0 with a volley after a corner from Emre Belözoğlu . This goal was awarded the 2010 FIFA Puskás Prize.
His last international match for Turkey was the 4-0 defeat in the friendly against Brazil on November 12, 2014. In the qualifying match for the Euro 2016 against the Netherlands on March 28, 2015, he was in the squad one last time, but came not used.

He also tries to convince other football players of Turkish origin to play for Turkey. He expressed himself as follows: “I am a tolerant person and respect Mesut's path, but I cannot support him.” Regarding himself, he said: “I am very, very grateful to Germany, I learned a lot here and a lot get many chances. But my mom comes from Turkey, my father comes from Turkey, I'm Turkish. "
