Emre Belözoğlu , or Emre for short , (born September 7, 1980 in Zeytinburnu ) is a Turkish football player who has been under contract with Fenerbahçe Istanbul since July 2019 .
Career
Emre began his football career at the age of seven with his hometown club Güneşspor. In 1990 he switched to the traditional Istanbul club Zeytinburnuspor . As a ten-year-old, he drew the attention of the Turkish Süper Lig talent scouts. In 1995 the change to the youth of Galatasaray Istanbul followed .
He has since played for the Turkish U-16 team, followed by U-18 and U-21 teams. In 1997 he became Turkish champion for the first time with Galatasaray Istanbul. He also played in the UEFA Champions League that same year and, at the age of 17, became the youngest player to ever play a European Cup for Galatasaray. In 1998, 1999 and 2000 further Turkish championship titles followed with Galatasaray and in 1999 and 2000 the Turkish Cup. In 2000 he won the UEFA Cup , but a dismissal that Emre got in the semifinals against Leeds United , he was suspended in the final.
The 2000/01 season began for Galatasaray Istanbul and Emre with the victory of the European Supercup against Real Madrid . In addition, they made the quarter-finals in the Champions League, in which they were eliminated by Real Madrid, although the first game was won 3-2 despite being 2-0 deficit.
After the end of the 2000/01 season , he and his teammate Okan Buruk moved to Inter Milan on a free transfer abroad . With Inter Milan he was Italian runner-up in 2003 and Italian cup winner in 2005.
As a national player, Emre reached third place with Turkey at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . There he was used in six games and scored a goal in the 1-1 draw against Costa Rica .
In 2004 he was selected by Pelé for the FIFA 100 list, which includes the 125 best football players.
Since the beginning of the 2005/06 season Emre played at Newcastle United . The reason to move away from Inter Milan was that he was rarely used towards the end of the 2004/05 season. Although he got a better offer from Fenerbahçe Istanbul than from Newcastle United, he made a conscious move there because he wanted to gain experience in England .
Because of riots following the World Cup qualifier against Switzerland in Istanbul , Emre was punished with a suspension of six competitive games for the Turkish national team, which was then reduced to four. On April 15, 2012 he was accused and admitted to having racially insulted his opponent Didier Zokora in the derby against Trabzonspor , he is said to have repeatedly said the words pis zenci ( dirty negro ) to him.
On June 1, 2008, Newcastle United gave Emre the clearance for a transfer to Fenerbahçe Istanbul, because he had made racist comments about his opponents. After both clubs were able to agree on a transfer fee of around 4.5 million euros, Emre signed a four-year contract with an annual salary of around 3.5 million euros.
Emre played his first competitive game for Fenerbahçe against MTK Budapest in Istanbul on July 30, 2008, where he came on in the 75th minute. In the second leg of the CL qualifier in Budapest, he scored his first goal in a competitive game for Fenerbahçe by converting a penalty in the 67th minute. In his first season at Fenerbahçe, Emre made 37 competitive appearances.
For the 2012/13 season Emre moved to Atlético Madrid for two years . He scored his first competitive goal on October 25, 2012 with a free kick to 2-0 against Académica de Coimbra in the UEFA Europa League encounter. After half a year, Emre returned to Fenerbahçe on January 31, 2013; he signed a contract until June 30, 2015.
After Belözoğlu did not receive a follow-up contract from the management of Fenerbahçe in the summer of 2015, he moved to local and league rivals Istanbul Başakşehir on a free transfer .
On July 1, 2019, Emre returned to his heart club Fenerbahçe Istanbul at the age of 38 and received a one-year contract. He himself described his return on the official Instagram profile of Fenerbahçe Istanbul as follows: "As a canary, I have now returned to my nest."
On September 7, 2019, he played his 100th international match as part of the qualification for the EM 2020 .
