Career

society

Gökhan Gönüls professional career began with Gençlerbirliği Ankara in 2002. For the 2003/04 season Gençlerbirliği Ankara pushed the defender on loan to the partner club Gençlerbirliği ASAŞ and OFTAŞ. There he was a regular player from the 3rd division until promotion to the Süper Lig . For the 2007/08 season , Fenerbahçe Istanbul signed him for a transfer fee of 1.4 million euros . The transfer took place between Fenerbahçe and Gençlerbirliği Ankara. There he signed a four-year contract.

On October 2, 2007, Gökhan Gönül played his first Champions League game against CSKA Moscow , making his European debut when he came on for Diego Lugano in the 77th minute . At the end of his first season at the traditional Turkish club, he missed the Turkish championship with Fenerbahçe. Nevertheless, they were satisfied with the Turkish Supercup before the start of the season. He extended his contract with Fenerbahçe for the 2009/10 season prematurely until May 31, 2014 and it includes a fixed transfer fee of 15 million euros. Gökhan Gönül again prematurely extended his contract in June 2012 for a further two years until May 2016 and planned to play with the yellow-dark blues until the end of his career .

In the 2016/17 season, the 31-year-old right-back moved to Beşiktaş Istanbul for free , where he signed a four-year contract. He played 142 competitive games in four seasons for the black and whites , from league, cup and European cup games, and scored nine goals.

After the end of his contract with Beşiktaş, Gönül returned to his previous club Fenerbahçe Istanbul for the 2020/21 season in August 2020 .

National team

Gökhan Gönül was appointed to the Turkish national team for the last two qualifying games for the 2008 European Championship . In his debut for Turkey on November 17, 2007, he was the assist for the winning goal against Norway .

Due to a broken metatarsus , participation in the UEFA Euro 2008 was doubtful in advance. The nomination for the provisional EM squad therefore had to be canceled during the preparatory phase.

On March 29, 2011 in the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium , Gökhan Gönül scored his first international goal in the qualifying match for the 2012 European Championship against Austria to make it 2-0.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Turkish squad . He was part of the regular team and played all three games of the group stage over the full season. In the end, the team was one of the two worst thirds in the group and was eliminated.

Style of play

Right-back Gökhan Gönül is known for his dangerous flank runs and precise flanks , which enable him to drive the offensive with courageous thrusts across the wings , showing that he can do more than just defend.

Football legend Zico compared him to the Brazilian international Cafu .
